Garage List
2008 BMW 328IC  [0.00]
2009 Z4  [0.00]
When I need to do some research about my E89's top, I look in the Bentley Manual for my wifes E93, 328IC. Both tops are about the same, and even share the same parts. I also found a document from BMWcoders.com. It outlines all the systems on the E89, including the top. The section in bmwcoders, about the hard top has drawings of all the circuits involved in the top. Enjoy the read, it's quite interesting. I hope it help you guys understand the top better.

Well, that is generally correct.

But in addition, you have to find an option to RELEASE the electrical locking of the roof package, when it's INSIDE of the boot. This is not possible with any known tool, regardless what can be found in the NewTIS documentation.
I've built a remote control unit for the hydraulic pump as well as for the front locking motor, to be able to support this emergency situation. Unfortunately no DIY solution.

There is a way!

You can unlock the roof from the open position! there are 2 screws you have to remove. this will allow the locking hooks to pass by and let you manually move the roof out of the trunk. Ofcoarse this is assumng you have released the fluid pressure from pump. Im a mechanic and just worked on a 2009 BMW Z4 with top stuck opened all the way and locked in. with lid opened near headrests in trunk there are 2 torx screws to remove

Also important to know that the reason they didnt make this info more readily avail is that the risk for damaging your roof is high. It is advised to let the dealer or an experienced mechanic that is familiar with the z4 top. even professionals can damage this easily. and it requires 2 people.

Did you really try this option?

I did, and it was NOT successful. These are M3 screws, which in addition areglued in.
Even not easy to find a tool as well as a long-bit that really fits.
I made a "dry run" on a working roof and couldn't get it opened.

its definitely not easy. We can thank BMW engineers for that. its position is a pain in the butt to get to. combination of the right bit and angled needle nose pliers seemed to do the trick.

I have pushed the roof up from the loaded in boot position, but, you need to unlock and lift the boot lid up to gain one person access. A mod i did or the US escape handle could be pulled to unlook boot lid.
Provided of course the roof isn't locked in boot.
Is it possible once pressure is released to pull the roof locks back mechanically.
Being careful not to scratch the panels.

There is a special tool which unlocks the boot lid from the trunk. Trunk has to be open for that though. Most diag tools can open trunk thru tool electrically.
