I was suffering from Welcome to e90post I have a 335 and it's faster then you syndrome when I've never really cared. I feel different about it now, and there's nothing wrong with improving the potential of your car.

My favorite thing to do to those who always want a green light drag race is: Act like I am willing to participate, then take off like a normal person... Nothing pisses them off more!
So going to try this! Hahahaha

I'll never understand why getting(or wanting) all of the power out of an n52, means that you should just get a n54/n55... That logic is completely ass backwards.

I love my linear powerband and the fact that my car starts every time without a CEL.. I just wanted to unlock the little bit of power i could; which is rather easy and cost effective compared to other some Naturally Aspirated models.

Again, don't take this as hate against the x35i models. They're great and are a fantastic platform for building big numbers rather cost effectively(especially compared to an n52).

The fact is that it's apples to oranges here.

Exactly, and if there's ways to improve our performance, why not do it.

I can think of 3 reasons

1- A lot of the 335 guys can't get over their head that there are other BMW models , engines, in their head bmw only made the 335 and is the best /fastest in car in the world ( they even talk the M3 down). Reason why you should avoid posting in the general forum when in comes to performance and stick to the NA section . God forbid you post anything related to N52 and mods in the general section. Then some of the 335 trolls call themselves mature , enthusiastic ( like spending 500$ for a chip is that hard), rich ( yea because buying a 15 000$ 335 indicates you economical status )
It's usually the ones driving the expensive 335 with mods other than a chip that are more respectful , on the other hand the ones driving the old 335s they can barely afford are usually the ones talking down the n52 ( not always the case)

2- Unrealistic expectations from the guys driving 328s. They want too much HP that they won't even use. Myself I was happy with the AA tune , and I m considering the 3 stage and aa headers. I ll be happy if I can get 20 whp out of this car, I don't really need it as I don't track/drag the car but I always like modding the cars I had and being a little different than the other ones ...

3- Cost effective. Some people believe selling your 328 and getting a 335 is cheaper than modding , which is not , as if you were to swap the very 328 for the 335 with same year, similar mileage and same options , you would probably be out 8-12 K $$ or more( after tax, depreciation and price difference). However if you want to run 400 at wheels , yes trading your 328 would be more cost effective than modding it as you will not be able to ran that much in the 328. However running your 328 close to a stock 335 is cheaper than getting a 335 . Headers, 3 stage intake , tune , a small bolts on will put you very close to a stock 335 for under 3 k or buy the ESS supercharger ( 5k) and you ll be beating stock 335s ( not modded ones though )

I tell you one thing though , I have a hard time keeping the 328 at the speed limit as the car accelerates pretty quick so I really dont see a point in running 400 whp in a car that is only going to be driving on the street. I know this is a very hard concept to understand for a lot of people... My next car I m planning on taking to the drag strip so it will be a little different

A dumb question for everyone -- why mod/trade to increase power and when do you need more power?

OK, two dumb questions, sorry. Serious questions though.

1. I don't want a 335.
2. My goals are realistic
3. I'm having fun, and I haven't spent too much

For me, trading to more power isn't exactly the best answer.

More power = more weight.

For example, my car...currently 218 whp @ 2991 lbs compared to a 135i at 255 whp (taking 300whp times 15% drivetrain loss) @ 3400 lbs

So, 13.72 lbs/hp on a 128i versus 13.33 lbs/hp on a 135i.

If we assume 335i you're around 14.11 lbs/hp.

Now, if I actually go full prep, I'll be around 2936 lbs (give or take) and lets say 240 whp.

I'm now at 12.23 lbs/hp which is over a lb/hp less than a 135i.

I'm modding to increase power to stay within the SCCA rules. Going to a 135i puts me into an extremely noncompetitive class. Plus you have to haul around 500lbs more worth of body which will kill you in any type of handling dynamic.

Didn't answer your question, but close enough.

Plus, I've never seen a 335i or 135i do this yet:

Too many people are concerned with HP figures. It doesn't tell the whole story.

Actually, I´m going for it with the other car of mine (Z4 e89 30i).... just fitted in an aftermarket (Drexler) diff final ratio of 5.00 instead of original OEM 4.27, thus expecting something like extra 17% of whp.... I will field-report coming April, once I pull my Z4 out of winter hibernation...

i would accept a 335i as a gift though

modding can add a small amount of fun without tipping off your insurance co.
