anyone knows how to change differential oil?
I try to change the differential oil, but e89 is kinda different from e9x.
First, the plate is blocking the differential, even there is a small opening there. Second, there are 2 bars connect the plate to the center of the body, and lastly, the sway bar is blocking the plug. Is it possible not to remove any of these to change my oil? I'm using EandS's picture to circle the parts that blocking my way to the plug. Thanks.

I just did this. It's easy. You need to remove the plate but not the 2 bars.
Drive the car to get the diff oil warm. Jack the car up and put it on 4 jack stands. The car must be level. I forgot what size socket you need for the bolt (14mm?), but you will also need a 6" extender so that you can back the wrench away from the diff. You will also need a suction gun to remove the oil (no drain plug, only fill plug). Go to Home Depot and buy the same size tubing that comes on the suction gun, but longer. Replace the tubing on the gun with this longer piece. You should get very close to 1 quart of oil out of the diff. Finally, you will need a pump to pump the new oil into the fill hole. Refill with 75W-90 gear oil until it starts dribbling out of the hole. That's it.

When I try to put the 14mm hex to the bolt, I can't even put it in because of the sway bar. Did you put the hex on top of the bar or below the bar?

Like I said, you need to get a 6" extension for your socket wrench to move the head of the wrench away from the diff and sway bars. if you do that, you'll have the room you need. And I use Red Line also - good stuff.

It's 75W-90 gear oil. That's all you need to know. If you had an LSD, then you'd need a specific type of gear oil for that application.

finally get it done.
Here is the pic that I was talking about. I didn't use any extension, because it didn't make any difference. The sway bar still blocking my 14mm hex, so I didn't get to fully insert the hex into the fill plug.

I see. Your hex bit looks awfully long. Mine is shorter and I don't have the clearance problem you have. I think that's the problem here.

that sure is the problem, and this is the only case that shows longer is not always better. LOL. I will find a shorter one for next time.

Hello friends.
I am raising the post, because my Z4e89 23i at 102000 km and 11 years old. I think it's time to change the oil in the mechanical gearbox and the rear differential. My gearbox manual: GS6-17BG TAPW capacity 1.3 at 1.4 liter of oil transmission MVMTF 75W80 Synthetic or MTF LT-3 My rear differential : 75W90 SAF-XO GL-5 Gear Oil capacity one liter. However, I have a few questions. For the gearbox and differential, I get the impression that there is no fill and bleed / drain screw but only a drain nut. Is that the case ? because on the BMW E90 / 92 there are still the two types of nuts. Your opinions ? |
