Anyone struggling to stay motivated at work?
I am. I stared at a corporate return that should have taken less than a day to do for 3 days. Maybe 4. Honestly can't remember. Browsing the internet, doing nothing productive, feeling disgusted with myself at the end of every day.
I say that I need a disconnect, some time away, but I got that over Christmas and clearly that didn't work. So I'm not sure what it is. I'm not by habit a lazy person. Just finding it harder to care about work. Feels like it is piling up and I'm out of control too in a way in terms of I can't remember who I've promised what and timelines. Pretty much reactionary right now to whoever screams the loudest. If you've been this way and have snapped out of it - what did you do? |

Remember what it's like to be unemployed, if you've ever had that experience lol. It's hard and we all do that. Just make sure your deadlines are good and have another cup of coffee.

I have 9 days left at my job I’ve been at for 21 years. So yes, it feels like 9 more years. Almost there……..

Thx, not formally retiring as I’m only 47, but have an opportunity take a break and look for something I’d really like to do instead of have to. I’m very fortunate to be in this position at my age, that is definitely not lost on me.

Stay off the web at work would be my best guidance to you. Just stems more distractions. Also sounds like you aren't challenged with your work, that probably is the main reason. If you aren't challenged or pushed by deadlines it makes it easy to procrastinate. If I slack for half a day shit will hit the fan, sounds like you could slack for days and things be just fine.

That being said I’m the type to put things off until the very end then bang them all out. I guess it’s like ripping a bandaid slowly or fast. Ironically I go slow on the bandaids. |

Depressing to see people that I've worked with for decades suddenly decide to retire or move on. Anyway, I'm keeping my nose to the grindstone and trying to knock off a few more every day.....

sounds like your buried under a ton of old work. when that happens to me its hard to stay on task and you just wanna say F it and not do anything.
maybe take a few days off just to try and catch up on work? if you're all caught up and still hating it then maybe its time to find something new or dial back the hours for a while to explore other options.

I keep a list of my deliverables (high level) in excel and discuss it each week and select what items I'll have done for this week. Then I schedule x hours out of the week to specifically work on those tasks. I found all this remote work has killed my drive. It's just so boring to be at home and I can't get into work mode without being at work. I'm excited to go back but for those who aren't, it's important to have a dedicated work area in your home that's only used during work and making sure you get outta the house twice a day to mimic going to and coming from work. Then do stuff after work (ie. Have a hobby) |

First off, are you self-employed, or are working for someone?

I feel you Joekerr been working since day one of COVID and people are finally getting absolutely coo coo for coco puffs. I feel like people were tolerating the first year, year and a half but now they are bat sh!t crazy. I need a break, I need a vacation but I don’t want to go anywhere. I don’t want to fly (masks, nut jobs, germs, cold weather) but I really need a break. I don’t know what to do. I feel like I want to take a week and go drive around, have lunch by myself, sit on the beach but I don’t want to burden my employees bc we are so damn busy.
I handle stress very well but honestly I am ready to snap…I love my job but I don’t want to go right now |

It's hard for me to remember when I ever had motivation. I'm one of those unfortunate people who have always found any sort of work as a necessary evil to be able to achieve a lifestyle I'd want. The problem I've always run into is, anytime there are deadlines and expectations attached to something, I no longer enjoy it.
Even if it's something I typically enjoy doing, the second there are expectations attached to it I automatically start disliking it. So that effectively kills the whole "follow your dreams" or "you'll never work a day in your life if you do what you enjoy". So I've just come to accept this is how it is, and I'll hopefully retire early and start doing things I enjoy with no expectations or deadlines attached to them. It's a sad reality for the next 20 years...

Do you have sources of income other than your work?

I’m pretty sure he was kidding. That aside, I started lifting again 3-5 times a week plus running/cardio 2-3 and it really has helped improve my mood. I realize it’s very hard for people to find the time though.
