smell when braking to a stop; brake fluid change

After having to deal with the smell for the last 2 months (driven only 2 times a week) I've finally figured out what the smell is and where it's coming from.

So I did a bid of research before posting. Seems like an easy thing to do with the correct equipment.

Some manufacturers recommend brake fluid every 2 years regardless of condition. But here's the thing: 2013 z4 with <19,500 miles on it, brake fluid is <20% change in color. So if I want to sleep better at night, I should shut up, and start changing the brake fluid.

But the question remains: Why does that area smell when I come to a stop when the brake fluid reservoir looks clean?

The smell isn't from the brakes, and if anything, I could go for another 5,000 miles before I consider needing to change the brake pads

What if I change the brake fluid and it still smells?

can you describe the smell? Brake fluid causing an odor would be a new one to me. Why are you convinced it is the brake fluid?

That’s the craziest thing I’ve heard in a long time. Brake fluid most assuredly DOES NOT smell when it needs changing. Take the damn thing to a qualified BMW shop and get them to diagnose what’s going on!

Have you looked in the engine bay with a flashlight? Something leaking on the engine could cause an odor. My previous Z4 had a water pump issue and anti-freeze was leaking on the front of the engine. You are looking for any discoloration or stains. If you find some, take a picture and post it up with the location

or you could just take it in
