Service Engine Soon
Well the service light came on this morning and the engine is making a louder ticking noise than usual. Bringing it in this afternoon. Before this the car was flawless it only has 5800 mile on it.
I'll keep you all updated stack |

I wonder if they are having problems with the ignition coils again. Happened on my 2003 325.

When you said louder than usual, does your engine always have the ticking sound?
I have/had the the ticking sound and had an appointment for service today but cancelled it because it stopped, is it normal to have a ticking sound coming from the engine? 1500 miles. |

So far I have no update. The dealer did try to dick me over on a loaner car. They called all around town to get me a rental and only after there were none available did they give me a car from their lot. I ended up with a striped down X3.

Yea it was Holtz. What do you mean they don't have to give me a loaner? The car is still under warrenty and in for an unscheduled repair. I can see them not giving me a loaner for an oil change.
I did get the car back today. They said the MAF sensor trough the code but they could not repeat it. So they just cleared it out. They kept my car for three extra days to make sure it did not come back. When I got it back it was all nice and clean too. stack |

Lexus does it for their customers, why can't BMW!
My dealer will, as long as you purchased it from them.

Loaners is one of the differences in where you buy -- it's not only where you bring it, but whether you bought there or not.
My first BMW, the dealer after-service was pretty weak -- when I got loaners, it was usually a rundown dirty Toyota (they owned a Toyota dealership too). And they were pretty clear that there was no guarantee on a loaner. This time, I went to a better dealership and at the time of sale, they gave me a detailed explanation of their loaner policy -- you always get one with an appointment. Only exception is if you are coming in at the last-minute they may not have one available. It does seem odd that they would hold it for 3 days to see if the light comes back on -- my understanding of that sensor is that it would not cause the car to be unsafe. If the sensor indicates a problem, the car is supposed to revert to a "last-best" condition. I had it show up on my 528 after 110,000 miles. When I first brought it in, they saw so many codes, he didn't know which sensor to replace. It came back eventually but the car ran OK for weeks before the problem occurred. I wouldn't expect a ticking sound while running to be ignition coils. It sounds like a sensor problem -- it throws off the engine timing.
