You were close, the object wasn't throw the ball over the wire, it was to HIT the wire. If you threw the ball and hit the first wire (closest to the ground) and the other guy didn't catch it before it hit the ground, you hit a single. if you hit the 2nd wire from the ground and he didn't catch it you hit a double. So forth and so on... the very top wire was the Home Run wire... If you hit that and he didn't catch it, it was a home run.

I just about threw my shoulder out playing that game..

Oh..and to your point, the darker it got, the higher the score would be and when the street light came on the game was over. Then it was time to go in, argue about getting a bath, put on my footies pajamas and start doing the homework that I told my mom I did already so I could go out and play...LOL...
