My solution to problem

Hi,

My father and I have a white E89. When we bought the car the dealer said they were not able to fix the noise the roof makes. It is squicking and especialy when we went over a bump.

I am an industrial designer and i found out that 1 part in particular was the cause of this noise. In the centre of roof beneath the back window there is a part that go's into the car. THis part is made of metal and inserts into a plastic part.

The plastic part is coated with a rubber kind of layer. i found out that this part was worn. Instead of buying a new one i decided to make a 3d printed part made of complete rubber, so it could wear down.

For our car it completely resolved al noise and we can enjoy a drive with the top on up and down!

You can take a look if it cuases you problem. I can share the CAD model so you can 3d print it yourself.

kind regards

Some felt pads either side of the wedge on the cross bar part of the T solves the problem.

I have both a E89 Z4, and a 2008 328IC E93. I have not had one roof problem on either cars roof system. I keep a keen eye on looking for kinks in the wiring, and hydraulic hose routes on both cars. The 328IC was purchase new, on Euro Delivery in June 2008. I bought the Z4 used from a lot in Pennsylvania. Both cars have been care free as far as any major repairs. I do keep up with lube on both cars tops, and look for crimped lines and wiring harness problems. BMW encases the wiring harness, and hydraulic line is a hollow fabric. This is to prevent chaffing against the metal parts as the harness flexes within the top. I look for signs of chaffing and cover it with black friction tape, and paint the tape with Scotch protection fluid.

There are probably several sources of rattles and creaks. To diagnose a common one simply press the button that opens the roof and lowers the top, but only very briefly. You want to lift the rear window as slightly as possible. This will take the weight of the roof off of the black plastic deck that it rests on and will also lift the locating pin in the slot in the center of the deck. If there are no more rattles the cause is from the locating pin, or the 14 small fasteners that hold the black plastic deck to the trunk lid These small nuts can be seen under the lid when the trunk lid is in the raised position.
Be very careful if you tighten these. They are indexed with paint to show if they have been moved and they may be quite fragile.
The center locating pin is also thought to be a source of noise and lubing it is thought to work also but did not in my case.

Thumbs up

Hi,
A Newbie (hopefully)...
I am in the process of buying a Z4 E89 and l noticed that there is an occasional “clonk” noise (or is it “klonk” :-) ) when the roof is up; occurring when there is a dip or bump on the road. No clonks when the roof is down.
From reading this thread, is sounds like (pun fully intended) the cause is due to the component which DutchE9WhitePolar referred to in this thread.
How serious is this issue, and can it be easily rectified without too much cost involved?
Any alternative thoughts on the cause and the solution(s) ?
Good forum by the way!
Greetings,
M.
