Markup Crazy! Kia Dealer Selling Telluride for $79k after $18k Markup!

Just in case you thought the world couldn't get any crazier than it already is, or if you already didn't despise the rise of SUV's in the United States, this Kia dealer is charging a whopping $78,995 for their loaded Kia Telluride. But don't worry, a generous discount of $500 is available As a reminder, the Kia Telluride is a mass-produced vehicle and not only that but has been on the market for two years now and still has a large popularity and insane pricing. This hasn't become too unusual for some SUV's as of late, but typically this has only been the case for luxury SUV's, such as the RSQ8 or the Mercedes G-Wagon which is sold out for two years with ADM's as high as $75k! With the chip-shortage and overall low inventory at dealers at the moment, its interesting to see how dealer's are reacting. Who would have thought Kia would go from cheap s**tboxes to one of the most sought after SUV's.

Kia Dealership Thinks Telluride Is The Most Sought-After SUV In The World

Keen readers will know that the automotive industry is currently facing immense manufacturing hurdles, with parts shortages leading to a sharp increase in vehicle pricing as dealer inventory dwindles. We recently spotted this Kia dealership that was selling a Telluride for $78,995.

A hastily written message describing the dealership's plight – which includes a number of typos – can be seen in the window. Long story short, due to the limited availability and popularity of the Telluride, the dealer won’t let buyers in for a test drive unless they accept a $15,000-$18,000 markup. We’re aware that this SUV is popular in its class, but the high asking price and markup has us scratching our heads.

For those who can't make out the image, the message inside the window reads: "CONGRATULATIONS! You have located the most sought after vehicle in the world. The 2021 Kia Telluride, this is the highest rated Mid SUV on the market. But you already know that. that's why you're here today. Due to the extremely limited availability and the popularity the Telluride sells for a market adjusted price of between $15,000 to $18,000 over the original MSRP.

"We cannot order you one, nor can we dealer trade for one. The colors and options that we currently have in stock are what are available for you to purchase today. If what we have in stock is something that you can see yourself owning at our market adjusted price, then we would be happy to take you on a test drive. If the foretasted conditions are not agreeable, then we appreciate you stopping buy however we are not going to be offering a test drive at this time. We encourage you to keep an eye on [redacted] for updated inventory." [sic]

The 2021 Kia Telluride SX starts at $44,390 with all-wheel drive. Adding every single option on the configurator, we could only get the price up to around $52,980. At that point, a dealer markup of $20,000 brings the Telluride up to luxury-SUV levels.

At such an exorbitant asking price, there are so many other fantastic SUVs that could be yours for way less. For around $55,000 you could have the latest Genesis GV80, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q7, while $80,000 would get someone into a BMW X7 with a few choice options. While this isn't the first time we've heard about crazy markups from Kia dealers, it remains as mind-blowing as ever.

We’d wager that asking so much for the Telluride will simply just push customers towards other brands. Details on the situation remain sparse, but the effects of the automotive parts shortages are clearly widespread. Let us know in the comments below whether you would fork out the cash or look elsewhere.

car market is nuts. I would laugh at someone paying 15k over on a kia... but then again people are paying 80-90k over sticker on used GT3s at the moment.

See if that "Market Adjust Price" is still in effect when you go to sell/trade it in 2-3 years.........

The Telluride and identical Hyundai Palisade are nice, but not worth nearly that much. I simply cannot understand the American people's fascination with crossover SUVs. I have never been in one that exuded any feeling other than convenient practicality. Such a feeling is not worth the surcharge.

One day, some people are going to be looking at that several year old Telluride/Palisade sitting in the garage with a grossly inflated monthly payment and upside down loan with serious regrets, I'll bet.

Any concerns regarding bending over apparently vanish when signing that dotted line.

I saw that too, Sienna's are surprisingly popular right now, been seeing a ton on the road. My local Toyota dealer hasn't been able to keep them in stock.

absolutely right on the last part. there is nothing special or timeless about these vehicles . when the market corrects people are gonna be hurting.

as to why people want SUVs and crossovers... i dont understand it either. i think most are feeble minded and think 'wow look how much more sheet metal i get for the same money as that sedan!'. a few will use all the space for its intended purpose. most of the SUVs i see on the road only have 1-2 people in it.

This. The Telluride is good because it punches above it's weight at $40k. At $60k or above, it really doesn't compete with other SUVs at that price point.

Plenty of dealers have been adding "market adjustment" to Tellurides for months. I just picked one up for my wife back in January. Luckily in our area, most dealers aren't marking them up, but finding the spec you want can be difficult. We actually drove 2 hours to cleveland to get the one we wanted. However, if i tried to head east (Philly, DC area, etc) those areas were all $5k-$10k over sticker.

I refuse to pay over sticker for any car, let alone a Kia. With that said, it is a really nice SUV for its price point. I'm not an SUV person by any means, but its not bad to drive. Materials, features, infotainment, etc are way better than similarly priced SUVs in its class.

It's definitely the best SUV in its class. A hell of a value for what you're getting, except most of them lose the value due to the markups. Its pretty impressive that they are still this sought after their second year into production. Definitely a big success story for Hyundai/Kia.

We just test drove just about all SUV’s available (truly functional vehicles despite some feelers in here) including the gv80 which IMO is a step above the telluride. It too was 70k. We still ended up loving the x5 more than any other.

What I don’t get is the obsession with hatchbacks .75 suv and zero towing capacity, or hauling serious air in single passenger pickups. Those don’t make sense. About as much as an 18k adm on a Kia.

May have to take back what I said earlier, it would appear the general populace is too ignorant to notice that the Telluride and Palisade are the SAME CAR. Not the same segment, not a joint development, the same car. Engine, transmission, chassis, all of it. Kia/Hyundai have had this relationship with most all of their models for decades.

Out of curiosity, I browsed local inventory to see how badly the insanity has hit my area. Identically equipped Palisades are easier to find and sell for 25% less. My local Hyundai dealer will let me look at the Palisade window sticker online, the Kia dealer will not.

I just can’t sometimes. Palisades are inflated like the rest of the market, but nothing like the Telluride.

One day these idiots are going to notice that their neighbor’s Hyundai is a carbon copy of their overpriced Kia, except the neighbor can also afford a boat to tow behind it. But hey, you made it buddy. There’s a Kia in your driveway.

Hyundai gives complimentary maintenance too which the Kia doesn't, also they have the new Calligraphy trim for an almost luxury interior experience. The Palisade isn't as good looking and I'm guessing that's what's really holding people back.

That's odd, I think the Palisade looks better. The Telluride looks dated with those 2000's Chevy Envoy looking head lights and funky grille. Lol, what do I know though
