child porn case backfired

MARCH 18--Meet Michelle Owen. Concerned that an ex-boyfriend had used her laptop to search for child pornography, the Indiana woman asked police to search the computer for illegal images, but had her plan backfire when cops discovered two videos of her engaged in illicit acts with a dog.

Uh that doesn't mean it's gone for good...basically it just deletes the reference to the files so the OS can't find it.

You can still recover the files with a program that can find it.

You need to overwrite it at least a few times (the more the better) to destory it and nil the chance for recovery...like SureDelete.

Yeah I know about all of those insane ways you can dig up old info on a drive. The data recovery center at my university was able to mostly recover the data off of a drive that accidentally had a hole drilled through it

Oh, and the FBI can recover data that has been written over up to 8 times btw

As regards sanitization, I doubt that. Someone will have to prove that claim to me by citing scientific evidence from a trusted source that such a feat can and has been accomplished.

That said, I'd still advise everyone to be cautious with their data. Far better to be too careful than not careful enough.
