The day after I got my car, an annoying rattle started in the cabin and I suspected the roof. It really did start to drive me mad and I didn't want to post on here to put anyone else off.
Initially I checked just about everywhere to try and find out where the rattle was coming from. I wondered if it wasn't the roof and in fact checked the glovebox, sun visors, passenger seat and headrest, door storage compartment as well as the passenger door! On one occasion I even half folded the roof down to see if there was anything slack or loose on the folding bits of the roof. Eventually I discovered that it was the inside trim at the rear glass window - there's a point where I think 3 different bits of trim meet right back at the glass area. As soon as I slightly pressed on them the rattling stopped, but there definitely was some slack that was making the noise. Eventually I might get a bit of velcro or something to tuck in behind the pieces of trim just to hold them together, but the cabin is now blissfully rattle-free again. Reading some of the issues with the E93 roof, I was starting to get a bit worried, but I think since the Z4 is only a 2 piece design, there should be less rattles and noises.

As for the door alignment, actually; the upper part of the door is wel in place (which is essential as it interfaces with window), it is just the medium part of the door which does not contact perfectly as for the other door.. not a big issue of course..but given weight of these doors; better to fix it rapidly. otherwise; still a joy to drive. |

I have to say that i fell lucky because after 2.000 kilometers and almost a month, I haven't heard anything in my car, not even a little noise... But I think that if this happened to me, I would be mad...!!

had a little dumb noise between rear window and the roof.....dealer washed seals and sprayed some silicone spray to lubricate them.....He told me that my car was not washed properly before delivery and it's usual for cabrio and spider that pre-delivery wax lies on those seals......after some time it becomes sticky like old candy under a shoe....

ok,went to the dealer to explain and show rattles (behind seats in upper part as other do have, kind of metalic rattle behind behind the dashboard and one in the central mirror, the latters just apper on very bad roads), plus the door alignement which is not perfect..
need to bring it back for 3 days.. will fix them after summer break, as dealer still have little information on new z4 what he told me is that almost all z4 owners brought their car back , mainly for rattle / noises. Apparently, there is an issue as well (technical note from bm) for the passenger seats, some kind of noise appearing when nobody is on the seat, affecting quite a number of cars.. |

I had to take my E89 in today as the seat belt and air bag lights came on and would not turn off. They said I need a new upper belt which they ordered. This is the first problem I have had. No rattles or noises here.

Guess moving the car to Germany for production may not have been a good idea! My US build ///M roadster has had no rattles or alignment issues.

Ok, finally I have concluded that the intermittent rattling sound is coming from the passenger seat. The reason its intermittent is that its only ever present when nobody is sitting in it! Have BMW issued a service bulletin for this and do you know where in the seat the noise is coming from - I had wondered if it was the headrest? Also, is it only present with the sports seats?

...MY DAMN "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON THIS MORNING!! I took it to the dealer on my lunch break and also addressed the seat rattle. Problem is that its an American spec Z and I'm in Germany at a German dealer (duh I suppose)...They do not have access to American service bulletins or the database that tracks certain complaints! "CHECK ENGINE"!!! I mean, seriously?! it has 5,600 miles on it. I'll let ya know what comes of it...the dealer says its probably just a false reading, but hell...that sucks too! Hopefully it is nothing, the seats get fixed, and my unscheduled oil change request won't cost me a limb....

So far, so good. When I first got the vehicle I did hear some odd cabin noises when the hardtop is up, but they seem to have went away. Guess it comes with the new car/convertible territory? I do wonder what the deal is with the passenger seat making noise for others, that's kind of surprising since I do have the sport seats and when I was hearing it was coming from my right... Strange. |

Sometimes when i am cruising along at slow speed i.e 15mph, a short dab at the gas pedal will produce some metallic rattling sound. Sounds like something is engaging and disengaging. Anyone else have this problem? Driving a 35i here

I find a large gap (misalignment?) between front headlights (left and right) and the front bumper. Is it a quality issue? Do I need to ask the dealer to fix it?

alright...check engine light was a loose gas cap, so yeah...i'm an idiot! as for the the rattle in the seats, they couldn't fix it but the good news is that they are having a tech from Munich come to the dealership this wednesday to address the problem. So hopefully it will be on corperate BMW's radar now...lol, your welcome! as for your headlight gap Otago, I will look at the Z's at the dealership and see if mine and theirs have this same thing going on, however it's hard for me to tell what exactly you are talking about from the photos supplied. but none the less i will take a look when I pick up my car in an hour or so...

It is pretty hard to tell which panel is which from your photos, and they are close-up photos. I would suggest though that the gap(s) are a bit on the big side - pretty sure I don't have anything like that on mine. Certainly worth bringing it to the dealers attention.

Have you got DCT? If so that's normal....had similar in previous Audi. It sometimes can't make up it's mind what gear to select on a light throttle and low speed.

I have a whining with the fuel pump - that I am probably going to take in to the dealer for them to look at. But other than that I have been pretty trouble-free.

From the pictures, I think it is the problem of the front bumper installation. If I have the problem, I will definitely tell the dealer.
