2023 M3 idrive 8 thoughts

So I was just advised that starting in July of 22 BMW is changing from idrive 7 to the new idrive 8! It’s the full glass screen for the instrument cluster and a 14.5 inch screen for the “infotainment “. Single piece of glass and it looks amazing.

My issue is that I have an M3 Competition that was ordered 4 months ago and will be here in about 3 weeks. Roughly 6/1/22…. The second I pick this thing up it will be “old” and I’m having an issue spending 100k on a car that will be the “old model” the second I drive off the lot.

Question, would you wait and place a new order? It will probably be 6 months before I see the car if I’m lucky. I’m having trouble even finding a dealer that has an available allocation. I’m totally stuck here. It’s my first M and want it to be special. Feel like I need to reorder. Or do I buy and drive while I place an order for a new one and sell??? Jesus help me!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

I wish since BMW will be placing ID8 in many new/updated vehicles, they also redesigned the dashboard so when viewing the screen from the passenger side, you wouldn't see that ugly leg holding the screen up.
Looks like an afterthought and gives a cheap look to the interior.

Garage List
Do you have another car if you don't take delivery of the M3 you ordered?

Keep what you have coming! ID7 is great. Besides, everything is eventually old. Just enjoy the car now (or in 3 weeks) rather than waiting what will be WAY longer than 6 months. Most dealers are seeing 8-12 months wait times.

My dealership just had their 2022 M3/M4 existing orders cancelled by BMW. No more 2022 and price will be going up for 2023. Not just that, but add several more months of waiting.

Given the choice, I'd rather have regular climate (and other) controls with ID7 than ID8.

The residual value on leases keep dropping so BMW can keep padding their profits. For example, the Z4 M40i residual dropped about $1500 since January and the interest rate increased.

Is it a given that if it's in the 2023 3 Series it will be introduced in the 2023 M3's?

Pay more for less

My 2022 G82 order was canceled so I’m ending up with the 2023. I was told all G80/82/87 after July 2022 will have the new idrive 8. Personally, I don’t like it for a mid to high end performance car but I appreciate your conundrum. In my opinion, performance cars deserve a separate gauge cluster and that’s my main issue with it. I don’t think it adds anything special to the M cars as it was initially designed for the EVs and quite honestly that’s where it belongs, imo.

That said - if you want the 2023 with idrive 8 you’ll have to go through the process of obtaining a new allocation and waiting for production. Every dealer within 100 miles of me is out of its initial allocations already. It’s also $2.7K more on the base price of every model and the options are more expensive. Spec’d the exact same way, my 2023 is $5K more than my 2022 would have been. And according to the 3 dealerships I spoke with, I’m “lucky” to be getting it at MSRP.

This is exactly how I feel about the whole thing. Is there anything inherently wrong with iD8? Well, it does kind of look lazy and tacked on the dash... but no, the OS itself is fine. It's that, in a sports car, it doesn't make sense. The car isn't self driving so having things nested behind a touch screen doesn't make sense. Tesla gets away with it because thats what their clients want, plus Tesla's arent really sports cars more than cars with strong low end torque. People love all the autonomous stuff and playing with their screens there. But for an actual sports car, to give people the iPad/android experience so in your face, without even a hood to differentiate the gauge cluster... I think BMW jumped the gun putting this in every car, and they absolutely did this to cut costs of having to maintain multiple interior configurations.

Thanks for your thoughts, I will keep it in my mind. I was looking for it online for my aunt. I will surely share your post with my aunt. She is my favorite aunt because she always helps me. Last time, I asked for a site from her where I can read Papersowl.com website reviews and she shared the https://twitter.com/papers_owl_com website link with me where I found all the reviews, I need to trust them. That is why I also always help her whenever she needs me.
