Go to www.realoem.com. This is a site that allows you to drill down to any part on your BMW.

Happened to me as well! And my dealer replaced it under warranty as well.

Sounds like a pretty flimsy piece of plastic to me. I suspect it'll happen again after another 30K or so.

$1.09 fastener, plus your time = warm feeling of self worth.

My hinges were broken when I bought the car used last month. I think this usually happens when the top hits luggage or something sticking up too far in the trunk. The dealer provided a new partition/divider under warranty. If you must buy this yourself you must buy the whole peice The hinges are not sold separately. This costs about $211.00
The part # is 51479128488
Good Luck.

I reassembled my broken clip, drilled through the broken clips and used the shortest screw and nut that would reach. Took 10 minutes, cost under $2.00 and doesn't rattle. Much better than buying a new shelf

Mine was broken when I bought the car. I fixed it with long zip-ties. But they just broke, so maybe I'll try the screw/nut solution. Thanks.

I love this forum. I just realized yesterday that my clip was broken and got pretty bummed when I saw on RealOEM that fixing the problem would run me at least $200.

What did you people who've had yours replaced under warranty tell the dealer when you went?

Mine's broken too (it was broken when I bought the car). I don't think you need to tell them anything other that "it's broken, please fix it under the warranty".

One of my clips broke a while back. I took it in when I had the oil changed and they sad the warranty did not cover it because the way it was cracked in their opinion was the result of an impact of some type. They determined this by looking at the break in the plastic clip. The real problem of course is that these clips should be made of metal or fabricated a different way.

Realizing how ridiculous this sounded, the dealership contacted BMW and was able to arrange a "good will" fix on BMW's part. I also do not know why they do not sell the clip as a separate part.

This experience taught me that BMW's warranty in the US is not that great because they deny or limit claims for bogus reasons just like the 3rd party warranty companies. Then the burden falls on us to try to get them to make the right decision for which many just do not have the inclination or time.

Great thread. Mine is fine, but I now have the answer and fix if I should run into the same issue. Thanx.

I had mine replaced under warranty at the dealer.

But now there's a small net in the back. Is that something new, or was just missing from my car when I bought it (used)?

Yep, just checked this out last week after my left side bracket broke. They do NOT sell the plastic brackets, only the whole cover with brackets. The parts guy offered that they probably didn't have many of these things break, thus, not an option for purchasing just the plastic bracket. Had to laugh when I saw this thread and realized many have had the problem.

I just superglued mine back together. If it breaks again, I will superglue and add a screw or two to help keep together. Definitely wont spent $210+ to replace the entire cover assembly.....

Same happened to me 3 days ago. The two parts just separated and showed no signs of breakage. Dealer repaired it under warranty.

Damn it! Mine just broke. Will see if they'll warranty it. If not, I'm just going to drill it out and replace with screws and nuts (and painted black to match).

Replaced under warranty thankfully. I wouldn't have minded a DIY fix if they refused warranty coverage though.

Which fastener did you use...the 3/8 or 1/2?

This is how I fixed this and I think it's a solid repair and probably stronger than the original brackets. When my other one breaks, I will effect the same repair.

The reason they only supply the complete assembly by the way, is probably because the brackets are plastic-welded on.

This is what I used:

4.5mm drill bit
Countersink drill bit
Countersunk M4 Allen bolts (25mm long, stainless steel)
M4 nut (Nyloc in the photo but any nut will do)

Drill carefully through the plastic pillars from the inside of the bracket, all the way through the outside on both halves.

Countersink the top bracket holes on the outside so that the bolts sit flush:

Assemble the two halves of the bracket together and tighten up the nuts on the bolts (not too tight). Make sure the brackets are properly aligned.

Now on the bottom of the bracket, use a Hot Glue Gun to fill the space around the nut with glue. Don't get any glue on the thread as you need to remove the bolt once the glue has set. The glue will now hold the nuts in place in the perfect position for the bolt to be inserted. This makes assembling the bracket onto the bar in the boot (trunk) much easier and also prevents the nut from loosening.

Job done and it looks pretty neat. I actually replaced my stainless steel bolts with some black ones I bought from Amazon and the repair looks like it was original equipment, plus it's considerably stronger than the plastic weld that was there before. These are the bolts I used:

Hope this helps.
