May 17, 2018... Munich. At today’s Annual General Meeting, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Harald Krüger, unveiled an initial design concept for the BMW iNEXT. The pure-electric BMW iNEXT will be built at Plant Dingolfing from 2021. The company’s new technology flagship incorporates all major strategic areas of innovation in a road-ready vehicle.

Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said: “The iNEXT project is our building kit for the future. It will benefit the entire company and all our brands. For the first time, we are combining all key technologies for future mobility in one vehicle. The iNEXT is fully electric, fully connected and also offers highly automated driving. Today, we gave our shareholders a very first glimpse of the design of the BMW iNEXT. Later this year, we will be presenting the BMW iNEXT as a Vision Vehicle.”

Thanks for posting this up, saw an article this morning.

So is this thing NOW an SUV or something? Fine if it's a crossover, but BMW better accelerate the calculus (pun) on the EVs.

3 years from now, this won't be an iNext it'll be an iLast....

Probably just me, but I think it's time to retire the "i" branding...it's so overplayed on everything from cars to mobile device chargers. I'm surprised BMW is using that mechanism to brand its future...it seems stale, worn out, and derivative of Apple. Pretty sure a marketing undergrad class could come up with that name.

I only hope it will be better looking than their i3 model. It looks like a sportsback from the silhouette but can't be very sure.

The i3 looks just fine, particularly my i3s. This is coming from a serial 3 series M Sport owner for the past 20+ years. There is also a 94' 911 in the garage.

Point is i3 is different and that's just fine for the modern era.

Agreed. I love the profile of my i3. The rear is very distinctive of what the car is, the only thing I would change is the front, which still looks a bit bulldog-ish. I've learned to love it, and it still looks fresh in it's age, there is still very little on the road like it. Compare it to the boring economy stylings of the Bolt and the Leaf. No contest.

I own an F80 M3 and an i3. The i3 is an absolute joy to drive and I do think it looks great for what it is. So much so, I just ordered an i3s which should arrive within a month or so. Sure, some people find it to be awkward looking. But, to say no one likes it is a huge stretch. I love mine.

Just hope it'll look like a car. Don't know why bmw thinks that EVs need to look weird. And the "i" brand is a joke.

And on a side note, have you noticed that the windows have the shape of the newer kidney grills? (Those that join in the middle)

Of course I'm biased, but I think the i3s looks nice. I justify my purchase with skipping the gas station and still drive a very fun car.

Mentioned the previous cars to say that I know what performance driving feels like; including on track. the i3 grows on you, just as this vehicle and future EVs will do over time.

You just have to open your mind to it.

I was in the same camp as you up until a few years ago until I realized something: The EV is the playground for innovative design that is off limits on traditional ICE cars. Let me explain:

Polarizing design has the potential to hurt sales. In such a competitive market where the top selling sedans and SAV/SUVs aren't renowned for their aesthetic sheetmetal, car manufacturers are not too keen on straying too far from traditional design language. In general EV owners and buyers are more open to radical design changes by their nature. Thus design elements deemed too risky for mainstream ICE vehicles have more room to breathe in the EV market. The i8 is one design success story that exemplifies this: a NEW car not weighed down by tradition that can be radical in both design and execution. And it works: even now it's one of the most forward thinking designed cars on the road, despite its shortcomings as an actual supercar hybrid. Design wise it's a complete victory. Try a radical new design on a 911, and the streets would riot.

So you can look at this from another perspective: if you like the traditional look of the automobile, be glad that car manufacturers have kept their more radical design elements to the EVs and have left the other cars alone.

The i4 is reportedly coming in 2020, a year before the production iNEXT. I don’t know if it fits the description of “normal looking”, but the concept is an attractive sport sedan (or Gran Coupe) to my eye.

no matter how many time I have looked at the i3 I come to the same conclusion, its ghastly with them bicycle tires. dare I say tesla model 3. why couldn't the i3 look like a model 3.

It's definitely a good car objectively, but sales show the public would rather not be seen in one.

Basically, every EV type car in existence has had this issue besides Tesla, for obvious reasons.
