Yeah in North Miami Beach. Nothing has happened to the building and no one is hurt.

But are they saying there's a pretty big risk something could happen to that building?

I’m sure there will be at least a few more as there has been development going on for many years and some buildings are aging. Inevitably, some are truly in bad shape and probably quite a few will be flagged because no one wants to be blamed if another disaster happens.

More than can be inspected within the timeframe provided. Something that everyone seems set on avoiding are younger buildings. I can think of several dozen off the top of my head that were constructed as recently as 2002 that deserve scrutiny.

Good news in bad times:
Quote:
Omar Blanco was sifting through the vast mountain of rubble at the site of the collapsed condominium in Surfside, Fla., when he was approached by a stranger and offered something unexpected: a handwritten card on colorful construction paper.

“It stopped me in my tracks,” recalled Blanco, 49, a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue captain.

He paused and looked down at the note, written by a small child he had never met before. It simply said: “Thank you for what you’re doing.”

After a grueling week of physical, mental and emotional strain, Blanco said, the modest message moved him deeply.

“The innocence of children reminds us that the world is a beautiful place, no matter what tragedy we might be dealing with,” Blanco said. “Nothing is more comforting than a note from a child just to say thank you.”

I cant help but think at this point... how sorry I feel for those that may have initially survived the collapse but were trapped in tight spaces with catastrophic injuries only to be left for over a week without food, water or medical care. Quite possibly the worst way to go; trapped in a small coffin while enduring pain and starvation until death. Ive been praying that no one suffered this fate but its almost inevitable given the amount of people involved.

Begs the question of what could be done to make these kinds of excavation efforts take hours to days rather than weeks or potentially a month in this case.

Unfortunately, my guess is that it is very difficult to accelerate these efforts significantly. Unlikely something like this could ever be completed in hours or even a day or two. Just such an unstable situation. Taking down the rest of the complex should help accelerate the remaining efforts but it is unfortunately more of a recovery effort than anything else at this point. And it didn’t make sense to bring down the rest of it while people could still be alive.

This news gave me a goosebump, I felt sad for the victims. I can't imagine being in the situation wherein it's either you can get out or be buried alive.

It's a morbid thought but I dunno if there's a worse way to die. Even eaten alive by wild animals or set on fire is probably 'preferable'. Just horrible...RIP to all the victims. It's quite a helpless feeling seeing this unfold before our eyes.

Ran across this animated portrayal of what could have caused the condo collapse:
