To fix and respray the bumper or switch to M?
My genius friend crashed my Z4 into his garage while parking. He wasn't very good with manual. So now I've left with a dilemma:
With him paying half of the repair bill, I have two options: fix and respray the bumper - $400 order and switch to M sport bumper - at least $1400 I realized for M retrofit, I need to order side and bottom air ducts, pressure seals, air duct oil cooler, 3 grids, and the actual M bumper cover. anyone knows what other parts i'd need to also order? can I reuse headlight washer cover, towhook cover, and BMW roundal from 35i bumper? anything else i should be careful about? and if i do switch to M bumper, what should i do with the old damaged one? THANKS!

Why is he only paying half the cost? Seems like he should be on the hook for the full repair (not the M bumper, of course)

Fix it, and save the money for the day when you scratch your rear bumper. Or simply get a new non-M front bumper and reuse what isnt damaged on your current bumper if possible.
While I love the front bumpers on the M3 and M1, I do not think the M front bumper on the Z4 is worth the extra money. There is nothing wrong with it, it is just that the non-M one is already great. That is, unless you feel your color does not match well with the two gray 35i inlet surroundings. With the M-bumber you get a wider and more aggressive look from the front, but you loose that lower "lip" which also looks great. But I like the rear M rear bumper a lot. It adds a diffuser and I think it is easier to change as well. |

The M Bumper looks fantastic, however what usually happens is that when you pay a visit to the dealer for service you fall in love with another car, do the trade in, and all the money spent on upgrades goes straight into the trash can. Just my $0.02

A lot of good genuine advices here, and I really appreciate it. I do like the more aggresive M bumper but like you said, the price doesn't really justify it, even taking away the 400 dollar repair. I'll spend that 1k on the AR downpipe instead, maybe that'll make me forget about the M front when I hit the track this summer.

I do agree that the 35i front looks nice already. It just didn't look so good all scratched up so I considered the M swap. too bad the price is something else all together. And I agree the rear M is a better swap than the front. I'm looking at those diffusers. some day. for now, Coilovers and dp over bumper anyday. Thanks for the advice!

If the car looks modified or resprayed the value goes down even further because normal buyers won't want to deal with it, and enthuasiasts who will deal will it will try to squeeze you hard when they negotiate.
Even putting a car back to stock is noticable (unless you take the time to use brand new bolts and gaskets and are very careful not to damage the clips and tabs on the undertray). I would leave it like that or just touch up the scratch because that way it is obvious the damage is very minor. a resprayed bumper will make people question the severity of the crash and negotiate your selling price lower. Sorry this happened man... its exactly the reason why i am SUPER paranoid and don't let anyone that I don't 110% trust drive the car. |

After some research comparing the standard vs M parts, this is the list of parts I believe are required to swap over to the M front bumper for a RHD e89:
Part Number Qty Description 51118051256 1 M Aerodynamics package Trim cover, bumper, primered, front 51117903744 1 Grid, center 51117262829 1 Grid lateral left (35iS) 51117262830 1 Grid lateral right (35iS) 51117844395 1 Set of mounts for PDC sensor, front 51118048042 1 Flap, towing eye, primed 51747903731 1 Air duct, bottom 51747903729 1 Air duct, lateral, left 51747903730 1 Air duct, lateral, right 51747903727 1 Air duct, engine oil cooler, right This is going from a 2009 RHD 35i to a 2012 RHD 35is M Sport. All the other parts are the same and can be reused. I managed to acquire an M sport bumper from a breaker on ebay, which only has a small dent for £90 delivered, which was a bit of bargain, as I was the only person who bid on the auction. I'm just getting some quotes from local body shops for the repair and respray costs, which are ranging from £200-300. I've contacted two local BMW dealers for the other additional parts above, but they are just quoting me list price, so I'm looking at other ways to see if I can get trade prices for these items.
