I8 v Z4 (e89)

Does anyone have experience with the I8. I love the looks of my Z4 but I want something even more. I知 eventually getting a 991 911 turbo but in the time being, I知 considering an I8. I知 curious to know how the I8 stacks up against our Z痴. Thoughts?

I think it is fair to sum up the cars you mentioned like this:

The i8 roaster looks like a super car, but it isn't.
The 911 drives like a super car, but it doesn't look like one.
The Z4 is somewhere in between.

The i8 has a very 5/7-series based suspension with narrow tires. The Z4 is 1/3-series based. The 911 has much wider tires and is more comparable to what you get with M cars in terms of suspension components.

So I guess the choice is simple. If you want more eyeballs, then go i8. If you want to strain your eyeballs more, then go 911.

Of course you can also mod your Z4 to get 911 performance from it instead. Here's my discussion on how to do that:

I guess you could also mod a Z4 to make it look as striking as an i8. Maybe take a look at some of the GT3-inspired builds:

That is an awesome response. Thanks. I read your post in the other forum, my main concern is having the N52 engine.

There痴 so little out there in terms of engine modification to get good horsepower gains. I shush I had the DCT sdrive 35i sometimes but I致e also heard bad stories with the HPFP and DCT issues.

I guess I知 kinda stuck on what to do with my engine and suspension balance. I also have the adaptive suspension

Have you drove an I8 yet? They look cool but the performance imo is not there. I would hold off and go straight to the 991 Turbo. I just picked up a 991 Turbo S (Cobb Stg2) and the car is amazing. Does everything well and love the awd. Best DD you can get IMO. The Z4 is my weekend fun car when the weather is nice (rare in Seattle)

The Z4 is never going to perform at 991 Turbo level. I run Pure stage 2 Turbos and methanol and the car is fast but traction limited and you must run a heavy duty clutch to handle the power.

I知 actually on my way to test drive an I8. Would be interesting to compare the Z4 to I8 performance. The turbo will probably come in mid next year though. Just trying to fill in the void between that time. I currently daily the Z4 but want something more between now and August 2021

Congratulations on your 911! I get to test drive one tomorrow too.

I was going to say the same thing about the 911 Turbo.

I have many hours in 911's and 911 Turbo's, GT3's on a track and it is nothing like the Z4. I love my Z4, but it is no 911 Turbo nor will it ever be.

The Z4 feels closer to a Cayman than anything.
