My experience with BMW folks contradicts the stereotype

BMW drivers seem to have a bad reputation. Why is that?

During the past few months, I've met several of you in person, chatted with some of you on the forum, and attended a couple of meets. Everybody I've met has been friendly, respectful and supportive. My view of the world has improved ever so slightly because of you.

I'd like to thank you guys for helping me with the ordering, leasing advice, order tracking, mod experiences, general helpfulness and genuine friendliness.

You all have proven the reputation to be baseless. I think if I ever need a favor, I'm looking for a guy (or girl) who drives a BMW because you guys are awesome.

Lol bmw drivers have a reputation for being douchy. If you read a bit more thoroughly you will notice why. I believe it's just people being envious since most of the country cannot afford German luxury so they conceived this stereotype. There are douchy car owners for every brand, but for some reason the stigma stuck particularly to bmw owners.

There's been a study on this, it's not just BMW drivers. Mostly German cars, in fact, high-end cars from my understanding. Some of these people who drive these cars feel that they're "entitled" to "own/dominate" the roads. The matter of fact is that most of these pompous douchebag never bought these cars with their own money, and use "daddy's money." I can't find that article but I can assure you, none of us are pompous douchebags; you've mistaken us for Audi drivers.

I am a BMW driver, and I can say that some BMW drivers are asses.

For example, my in-laws who drive a BMW and MBZ, also happen to drive a Honda Fit. While they were out in their Fit, a person in a BMW scoffed at them while they were loading groceries in their car (they are both in their late 60s, so they don't move as fast as some would like). The individual was waiting for their parking space, and was impatient. Well the space next to them opened up and the BMW driver took that space instead. While he was exiting his vehicle, he made a remark to my in-laws about how they were wasting this individual's time. When my mother-in-law attempted to apologize, the individual said, "That's why you only drive a Fit"

This is where BMW drivers get their reputations is from some entitled idiot who drives his car like some sort of privileged badge of honor.

As I see it, at a 4-way stop, the person who goes first is determined by who arrives first - not the person that drives the most expensive car.

It's just envy and jealousy. I'd also say that a car guy is a car guy. The ones here that are into their cars are car guys. The ones who buy a car because it has a roundel as a status, do nothing to their cars, never use them to their potential, are typically the DBs.

like most things, the change can be explained using numbers.

BMW is now the number one selling "luxury" car. in 2014 they sold more than 2,000,000 vehicles.

lets put that that into perspective. in 2014 porsche sold under 200,000 vehicles... 10 times more!

there was a day that bmw was a more exclusive car but due to it's popularity (and rightfully so) it blew up.

now take some of the replies above "haters gonna hate". people wanted that exclusivity, couldn't have it, hated and therefor it gained that reputation. now it's only passed on to the current gen mostly as a passing joke because people either know someone that drives a bmw or knows someone that does. in other words, billy is okay with bob and they both own BMWs so BMW driver's aren't really bad people so billy and bob wonder what the misconception is.

then again there was some ass-hat study that showed bmw drivers were more likely to blow stop signs or not wait at stoplights before turning even when people were present... or something like that. i forget what the details are but maybe that's why. haha i like my theory better.

I with you but I don't use my car to its potential, does it mean I'm a DB? I don't brag about my car. I bought it bc I love cars and I wanted a nice sport car. I know it's not the best but it's the best I can do right now.
