You would spend more money and man-hours on getting one flying than if you built it from scratch in your kitchen.

Probably way less, but I believe that the blueprints have been destroyed in the name of national security. Besides, the finished product wouldn't have the historical provenance of those Iranian F-14's.....

Poor US F-14s. It's as if a couple of F-22s can't shoot down all of Iran's F-14s.

True story (note I am always suspect when someone starts that way). I was racing karts 35 years ago or so. A race weekend at Bryar, now NH Motorsports park, I was going through a fast right hander, coming out of 2, and my spindle broke. I have no idea what it looked like from outside but from my view it looked like I was taking off. It went silent and the horizon did a 360. I came down backwards but wheels down at the apex of 3.

The sound started and I took inventory. Everything seemed to be working but the safety crew took me to Concord General. On the way my brother didn't let them cut the suit off so we got it off in the meat wagon and my chest hurt so I thought I had broken ribs. At the hospital the attending was Arnie Miller (don't ask why I remember that). Turns out ribs were fine and I had a compression fracture of the spine. Broken back for short. Back at the track on Sunday morning and traveled back to NJ that afternoon with a stop in Wooster to see my orthopedic surgeon. It hurt but a motocross belt and some good meds made it doable.

I was told by my orthopedic surgeon that I should do nothing but walking and moving. He told me I had one chance to fix it and if I was bad, he didn't want to have to intercede. I have had no back issues since BTW.

Getting to the point, I have a good job so I decided to spend 6 weeks in the Florida Keys to recuperate and went to get a flight physical to be current so I could fly from Islamarada (Marathon airport) to Key West or West Palm if I wanted. Or just sightsee. Anyway, the flight surgeon looked at the x-rays and said if I were his patient I would be in a brace. I said no thanks and he passed me saying that a broken back didn't disqualify me. I had a great time recuperating. So your mileage may vary. [/QUOTE]

PS-I kept all my kart equipment for years hoping one of my kids or someone would be interested. Never happened so I sold all of it a couple of years ago as my wife found it all in storage, she rarely went there, and had a fit.

Once you get the chip breaker and plane iron set (the plane iron should stick out past the chip breaker a very very small amount, approx 1/32"), then adjust the mouth opening to between 1/16" and 3/32", it will plane transparent shavings with each stroke... Watch Paul Sellers' youtube videos about sharpening and plane setup for more information.

On my Lie-Nielsen #6, the plane iron came sharpened from the manufacturer, but the chip breaker and mouth needed to be adjusted before it would actually plane well. Now, it's awesome!

The only downside I can see with Lie-Nielsen planes is they make you want more of them. It's possible to tune an antique or vintage Stanley Bailey or Stanley Bedrock plane; however they can be very expensive on eBay. What I've found with the antique / vintage planes is with a well sharpened plane iron, they can work very very well too. And, you can get new plane irons and chip breakers for the antique / vintage planes as well! hocktools.com

My doctors essentially ended *her* motorsports activities as well. She co-drove at every event, and was the crew chief. I cannot be outdoors for more than a few minutes, and they are not even happy about me driving 11 miles to work. Back in the day, I did a non-stop solo drive from upstate NY to Ely, Nevada. Any transportation physical would never get past the ECG, when they have to put sensor stickers over the obvious scars. My ticker is so far gone that I qualify for the transplant list, and my cardiologists would have me out on permanent disability with an LVAD implant today if I took their advice.

I did 22 years regionally, five years of Pro/Tour events all over the east coast, 2 trips to Nationals, 18 years of regional club management, and at one point chaired autox programs from the eastern tip of Lawn Guyland to the Catskills and Hudson Valley of upstate NY. As a licensed Safety Steward Instructor for many years, there is no way that I could let myself drive. I also put on track day events at Lime Rock, Pocono, and Watkins Glen over the years.

My DW looks at my race car hauler, Formula Vee, and A-Mod car project parts collection (including the wing airfoil cores) in the garage, and hints that maybe we should part with them. I told her to leave me at least some hope, as a reason to live.....

Sounds like you have one foot in the grave and the other is standing on a banana peel.

When you die, if you haven't disposed of your collection, you'll be creating a big headache for your wife. She might give it all away or sell it for pennies on the dollar just to get rid of it easily.

On the other hand, if you sell it yourself, you'll probably get more money for it, you'll save your wife from extra grief, and you'll actually have something to keep you busy for months.

We will all die someday, obviously, but we can choose to ease the burdern of our survivors by getting our affairs in order first.

My DW used to work as a professional mechanic, and just yesterday told one of my friends that she wanted to build a room to display the Audi in our next house. Plus, she knows another one of our friends that has offered more for the Vee than we paid for it whenever I'm ready to sell it.

Ironically, she is helping the elderly couple down the street liquidate their workshop and household stuff as I type this. I suspect that we will have a metal lathe in our kitchen by dinner time tomorrow, and their golf cart followed her home last week for a fuel system flush before it is re-homed.

I'm not worried about leaving her to re-home my stuff.....
