...when you finally understand the allure of a warm cup of tea.

I had a nice, warm cup of tea this afternoon for the first time in decades, and it thawed out my frozen hands, innards, and everything else that has been shivering for a week now. If I wasn't NPO for a lab test tomorrow morning, I would be sipping on another cup right now.....

In early '84 my unit was staged to deploy to Lebanon on short notice. In the military, anytime you leave the 'States and you're headed for somewhere other than a big US overseas base, you're going to be a human pincushion. We were all in single file, following the yellow tape line on the floor and having our throats and ears inspected and our junk felt-up and getting shot after shot...not the kind of shots we preferred, mind you. Coming up to the station where they used the "gun" on you, the guy in front of me was wobbling visibly and looking pretty peaked. As luck would have it, the gun's vial ran dry 2 or 3 guys in front of us. With all of us watching, the doctor very unceremoniously pitched the empty vial into the trash and screwed on a new vial, after which it's necessary to bleed the air out of the gun. He did this by firing several "shots" into a bucket about 10 feet away. The squeamish guy in front of me saw this and instantly fainted dead away; we caught him on the way down. The doctor, meanwhile, never missed a beat. He pulled the gun to the absolute end of where its air line would reach and gave the fainted guy his shot, in his fainted state, as if nothing had happened.

Those guns weren't so bad. Certainly a lot quicker than using syringes.

If the operator didn't administer it properly, or the recipient happened to move, you ended up with a nasty bleeding gash in your arm. I speak from experience. Bled like a stuck pig. As I was leaving the room I was pulled from the line, bitched at for bleeding on the floor, and sent back for a do over to ensure that the vaccines had been thoroughly inserted. Ahh, those were the days...1966.

The Army used those injection guns on us at Ft. Bliss in August of 1967 at the beginning of BCT (Basic Combat Training). I recall one guy bleeding badly after the technician slid the gun across his arm. I think he did it on purpose.

During AIT at Ft. Sill, they only used needles on us, but it was 4 needles at a time, 2 on each side. I felt like a pin cushion.

I'm still trying to figure out what a Kardashian is, and why I would ever want to keep up with it/them?

The one that's got me baffled lately is TV commercials. I've been watching too much football the past few days, and I cannot understand any of the words in several musical sound tracks that they are using. Top of the list is a commercial apparently for Microsoft Teams...or maybe 'roid creme...I'm not sure. Might as well have the adults on a Charlie Brown TV special talking, and it is certainly the worst way to sell a web conferencing system by using an audio track that implies that their conferences are equally painful to listen to!

Get off my TV, kids...and torn that noise that you think is music DOWN!!!!!

I was watching "A Christmas Carol" on FXM on Christmas Eve. First show I've watched in ages that had commercials. I habitually mute commercials. That's when you see how stupid commercials really are.

You know you're old when:
- you remember radio programs
- your first TV was black and white
- children were a form of TV remote

I also remember the first night I was able to sneak watching TV so late that all the programs ended, they played the Star Spangled Banner, and the screen went to static. I couldn't understand..."TV ends...???".

We only received 3 TV channels, all via a roof antenna. All 3 TV channels ended the broadcast day with a test pattern. It looked like an Indian, surrounded with rings of various shades of grey to black. And oh yeah, an audio tone.

If you are going back that far, we can add:

- stick shift on the column
- wringers on washing machines
- 78 RPM records
- milkmen delivering milk to your house
- margarine where you had to mix in the color

Had a three-on-the-tree for my first car. Had some 78RPMs. Milkman would deliver milk and leave in between the screen door and the main door. Wringers and margarine color...not so much.

Our milkman also delivered chocolate milk, but my parents only got 1 quart so you had to be quicker than the others in the family.

Auntie had a Victrola crank record player, and G-d forbid we touched it. Washing machine?...how about a washboard and tub in her basement?

I learned to steer and shift in Dad's pickup somewhere between 4 and 5yo, and I was allowed to drive the Chevy sedan around the back yard all by myself when I was 7.

And most kids in my family knew how to handle, check and load a weapon, plus the respect never to even think of touching them without a parent. I learned rifle about 10yo and pistol a few years after.

Oh those were the good ol' days!
