My Backyard Build
I have posted bits and pieces of this around this forum. I am finally close enough to finished to compile this thing.
A little background. I live in the Bay Area, CA, I bought this house about 15 years ago, didn't plan on staying this long. Now values have gone crazy and we aren't going anywhere, so we had to turn the house into a place we want to stay. My wife wanted a pool, I wanted an outdoor kitchen and a pizza oven, so we went for it. I have personally put in every screw, nail, and bolt in the pavilion, and 90% of the welds (I had the support posts made because the city needed special inspections and time was an issue). I made the counter tops out of concrete, I'll be putting them in this weekend. On to the pics. |

Nice looking work!
Doing good things for your prop value for sure! Question: how did you lay out the pavilion roof? Mostly the truss/supports and the wiring for that center hung chandelier.

as far as the nuts and bolts of how i did it, I stacked up pallets in the middle of the structure so i could place the beams without them falling down. Cutting all the angles and notches was a pain in the ass, but it worked out. the wiring is not in yet, the chandelier was just mocked into place, i am actually going to get a bigger one to fit the space better. I am also going to box in the ugly little 2x beams and put recessed lights in the “boxes” i’ll tuck the wiring in the boxed beams too |

not even close, but look at the people that do
i just like tools, building stuff, and figuring things out, none of it is really that hard, you just need to break it into little pieces the concrete counter tops are the closest to my wheel house |

they usually use, what i would consider, a substandard mix, and since it is inside you can’t polish it properly. They offer wax it and buff it, if you look around the edges there are voids etc. I like some little marks/voids that let you know that it’s concrete, but some of that stuff looks bad to me. The other thing i don’t like about pouring in place, of ‘face up’ is that your final finish is only going to be as good as the guy who put the finish on it, it can be bumpy etc, and that will carry through even if it is polished. as you can see in previous pictures, i make the forms out of melamine (the white coated particle board that cheap shelves are made out of), and pour the pieces face down, when they come out of the form they are very flat and very smooth and even, it makes polishing them consistently much easier. i like to polish with water running, on these i’ll start with #200 pads and go on up to #3000 (the same pads and equipment you would use to polish granite) my brother and i have done counter tops for his outdoor kitchen, his bathroom, my office and a tattoo parlor that a friend has (friend of a friend really) |

Wow. Seriously, wow. I'm happy if I manage to vacuum the whole house on a weekend. I can't even wrap my brain around a project of that magnitude.
