Time will tell
I have a current generation E89 Z4 and I love the looks of the car. The new Z4 is longer, wider, taller and probably heavier, does not come with 6 speed transmission and will probably cost a lot more. Not to mention that the Toyota Supra coupe is the same car with a Toyota badge. Not a good image for BMW if you care for such things. Back to the car itself. I find the front end to be a jumble of mismatched lines, curves and odd shaped openings. It does not flow like the E89 front end. The side and rear views are ok but nothing exciting. I read some of the specs in Roundel and noticably absent for a supposed "sports car" was no mention of a water temperature gauge, an oil pressure gauge, shift lights or other sports car instrumentation. The only thing highlighted were the infotainment additions. Unfortunately BMW is evolving away from its "ultimate driving experience" mantra across its product line. Like all other companies its devoting its development efforts to sports activity and sports utility vehicles. BMW is pushing the envelope with its turbo charged engine development. Unfortunately all that power can only be used for a lap or two on track before the cars go into limp mode. Frankly I like a coupe better than a convertible so I will wait to see what the Supra looks like. Only time will tell. In the mean time I'll keep my Z4.

I haven't done a lot of in depth reading about the new Z4/Supra as our current E89 is my wife's DD and not something we would replace with a subsequent model. However I'm curious about the drive train. Are both manufacturers using the same basic engine and will both be built in the same factory a-la Mazda Miata/Fiat 124 (which, I know, uses an FCA engine)?

Does anyone feel the way I feel? Basically, I dunno what the heck BMW is doing, they can't seem to make up their mind about what they want in the Z line...718 competitor? SLK? Hybrid? I'm pretty objective because I don't have the typical 'I own my car so it's the best' mentality. Heck, I was disappointed when they ditched the E85/86 for our E89. Yes, the hard-top is a vast improvement and I'd never consider a rag, the DCT's great, but I didn't like that it was quite bigger/heavier. They should've just used our front and modernized the first Z4. I would've gone for the E86 if not the Z4MC.
Now this latest one is yet another regression and disappointment esp w/ all the hoopla, going back to the rag. The front looks alright but the rear is quirky, kinda like the opposite of the new AM Vantage. The power increase isn't that amazing esp compared to a 35is. They also lost the DCT for a slushbox? Are they just throwing darts and picking what stuff to put into their cars now? No idea who's the target market here. It's a big pass for me. |

"They also lost the DCT for a slushbox?"
Is that for real?? My entire life I've had manuals, and swore I'd never make the switch. However after driving a 35i with DCT, I did make the change and really enjoy it. The concept looked pretty cool, but I too think the final product isn't so great. If indeed there is no DCT, then forget it. It's a no brainer, I'll keep my 2011 ! |

I honestly felt part of the reason was the return to the ragtop + that front grill...not BMW at all. Take a look at this render of the Z4M coupe by top speed with the old style grill and hard top. If this was made, I feel it stays much closer to the BMW styling we are all used to. It even makes the lights less out of place. https://www.bmwblog.com/2018/11/11/b...-by-top-speed/ |

I wonder if anyone from BMW reads these posts and if they do, do they really care that the new Z4 is getting less than a stellar reception from from the hard core base of Z4 owners?

They are looking for a wider customer base than the current 'hard core' base provides for more sales.

Ya, I agree w/ the OP, very doubtful, esp looking at how the line has been 'developing' w/ each successive model. It's supposed to be the most sporty line, but it's anything but that w/ 1/2-hearted efforts.

Don't like it one bit from the exterior. The classic timeless cool design in the swooping lines of the e89 and predessors are completely gone. The trunk is too long, the seemingly shorter hood seems only to slope down instead of a the e89s 'wave'. Front wheels are too far back. All those over aggressive lines on a car thats not a racer anyway with all its luxory and weight....
I imagine myself being on a weekend trip with my girl, rolling in a quiet French village for a coffee and showing up with this attention seeker with its Merc front/350z side and fartugly back. I'd feel pretty emberrased parking that sob. In my e89 I get tons of hate on the road already. I can only image with the new wannabee how bad it will get. Nah, a roadster to me is subdued power and class. Something Aston Martin does manage. This new Z does not provide that the slightest imho. Give me my e89 or any older model for that. |
