My, how the Army has changed. When I was in, each soldier had one foot locker and one wall locker and they were inspected at least once a day. Everything inside had to be in perfect order. Not only that, there was NO room for anything except what was issued to us.

My son actually watched Requiem for a Dream today for a film studies project and I decided to watch since I haven't seen it since it first came out. I forgot how depressing the last thirty minutes of the film are, definitely some disturbing stuff too.

The Vanishing, 1988.

NOT the US version (meh)-- the Dutch/German/French one (it has subtitles).

No violence. Hardly any profanity. No blood. no gore.

And the flat-out most terrifying movie I've ever watched.

I saw it almost 30 years ago, and it *still* gives me the heebie-jeebies.

It's one of those that get into your head and you can't stop thinking about it.

There are scenes in these movies I'll never revisit.

"Bad Boy Bubby"
Bubby (Nicholas Hope) has spent all of his 35 years locked in one room. His mother (Claire Benito) feeds and washes him like a baby, but she also uses him for sex. She has raised him to believe that if he goes outside the door – which is always locked – he will die from the poisoned air. She leaves him alone for long periods where he believes Jesus is watching him. Bubby’s only companion is a cat, which he torments. He is not malicious, more a naughty child. Bubby’s world expands with the return of his father, whom he has never met.

"Nanking"
"Nanking" tells the story of the rape of Nanking, one of the most tragic events in history. In 1937, the invading Japanese army murdered over 200,000 and raped tens of thousands of Chinese.

Less of a specific movie, more of a shared action. When the character does that buzz-move thing, I just KNOW they are evil. Most memorable right now is in Jacob's Ladder

That's a creepy movie alright. Didn't see the remake so don't know if it's good or not. Really wasn't interested in seeing it. The first one was enough.

There was a remake??? I can't drink for two weeks, but maybe in a bit I check Netflix for a remake.

But you know that character/action I'm talking about? I've seen it in other films as well.

Yeah, the blurred, fast moving back and forth faces, right?

Actually I think they were just blurred and distorted in Jacob's Ladder.

Esteban I watched the new one last night.

More depressing by the end, then anything else. But even Jacob did the shimmy-thing in the remake.

What disturbs me the most: How long are YOU ALL going to continue this experiment on ME??? 54 years is enough of this to determine whatever it is you are trying to determine about my psyche!!!!!!

I thought I was the only fan of Japanese cinema and Takashi Miike in particular. Although I also like suspense films like 13 about Russian roulette or casino robberies.

Don't if it is already mentioned but "Get Out" was also pretty heavy. I thought it was a great movie but no way I can watch it again.

My wife spent the weekend with her mom on a "girls weekend" kinda thing. Antiques, baking, lots of feelings, probably some crying. You know the deal. So i did what any mid-40s married guy would do in the time of COVID. I hit the local butcher shop for a juicy rib eye, picked up bottle of 4 Roses small batch, and settled in on the sofa with the dogs to watch anything but the typical romcom my wife likes to watch. I was looking for anything with explosions, guns, zombies, car chases, boobs, and all-out apocalyptic mayhem. Army of the Dead had so much promise but fell so flat.

It should have been directed by Robert Rodriguez. Mic drop.

Agreed on the potential this film had. All the makings were there.

Cracking up the set up on this post. "probably some crying"

I'm not sure why but I keep rooting for Dave Bautista to make a decent movie. It's kinda like Nicholas Cage, who I'd keep watching in movies and rooting for in the the hopes he'd do well. I guess i like an underdog.

Same! I saw him in The Man with Iron Fists and thought to myself, "Hm." I really thought this might be the movie for him to shine in. I was too hopeful for sure.

Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Clockwork_Orange_(film)

The violence is portrayed in such an off hand, random and casual way, I found it very, very difficult to watch. Even Kubrick requested it’s withdrawal from cinemas in the UK. When I saw it on television about ten years ago, it was shown late at night and came with a strong warning / caveat. For me, no “horror” comes within a country mile, of just how disturbing some of the scenes in this film, present violence.

One of my favorite films. Disturbing in a desensitized & sarcastic humor-ish way. I could only imagine how well this would go over being released today.
