Top Hall Sensor Question

Hi Everyone (and RobbiZ4 )

Does the hydraulic cylinder on the right side of the trunk have 1 or 2 hall sensors? There appear to be spaces for 2 to clip in.

See image.

Thanks!

Here's an image that appears to show 2 hall sensors clipped in.

I think I've answered my own question based on another forum. There are 2 hall sensors.

Follow up question. Does a replacement OEM top harness include the hall sensors or are they separate?

Hi Bryan,

Yes, there are 2 hall sensors on the right hydraulic cylinder, none on the left.

The front one next to the piston is responsible for the short delay when closing the boot lid. The rear one detects a completely opened boot lid.

None of them is included in the harness, as they do have their own part numbers.

Thanks Robbi! Great info, as usual.

What does the hall sensor that is on the cylinder in the roof package detect?

I know the last one is in the floor and detects the partition.

It detects the rear roof shell lying perfectly ON the front shell and initiates the next opening step. Also mounted on the right side only.

One million dollar question especially for you:

What about the FIFTH hallsensor?

Thanks again!

I wasn't aware there was a 5th hall sensor… 🤔

YES, there is another one in the boot on the hydraulic cylinder of the right main pillar.

This makes more sense now. BMW lists 4 hall sensors in the technical manual. But one piece has 2 sensors so it's 5 in total.

@RobbiZ4

Has anyone ever written out the full opening and closing sequences detailing what is happening during each part of the process and why (with hall sensor and microswitch triggering, etc)? That would be really valuable info!

Tbh, this is not quite correct.
There are in total 4 hall sensors mounted on hydraulic cylinders. Each of the same type and partno.

The fifth one is sitting in the boot to detect the position of the luggage compartment. This hall sensor is a completely different part with a partno of its own.

RobbiZ4 hoping you can shed some light on this.

I have fault code A694. When using the BMW fault decoder, it says:

Microswitch 'cowl panel reached'

Can you explain what this means and what would need to be replaced to fix the fault?

Thanks!

Looks like location B, number 3. Is there just one microswitch here or is it paired left and right?

Looks like it's paired…

Part numbers:
54377227397 Left
54377227398 Right

Are these correct?

Should both be replaced at the same time?

Fault code numbers can be checked against this web database:

https://bmwfault.codes/

From the result list take the explanation for the correct ECU, in our case "ctm_89".

You have identified the correct description and the correct location B.
It's the microswitch on top of the windshield on the right. There is only one microswitch, not a pair.

Issues with this microswitch are very very rare, so I'm wondering what might have happened to it?
Any experiments with grease, oil or WD40 on it??
