While it is indeed impressive, at the same time the cars are two completely different markets with different demand, obviously with SUV's being far more in interest than sports coupes, and I believe Ford is also prioritizing Mach-E production over regular Mustangs during the chip shortage.

What will really be interesting is to see Mach-E sales versus other Ford SUV's like the Edge and Escape, as well as sales compared to EV competition such as the iD4, Model Y, Ioniq5, etc.

Yup, SUV/crossover is what people want. It's freaking mind-blowing that a manufacturer makes so many varieties of "crossover"/CUV now...

A little misleading as the article mentions the chip shortage as a major reason for less gas mustangs sales. Plus the car is like 7 (give or take) years old and the Mach E is the "new hot thing". That being said, I've seen them popping up all over my Detroit suburb and it's not surprising that any CUV/SUV is going to outsell a 2 door coupe.

Saw a couple on the road already. Not really a special looking vehicle. I had to take a second look to be sure because it's likeness to a Tesla Y especially in side profile. I could definitely see these selling better though by the Ford brand alone. Even the Bronco sport looks like everything else they sell. It's mind boggling with all the different nameplates.

We don't have as many real mustangs up here because most people use them as summer cars only or 2nd / 3rd cars but they sure are common as heck. Probably 3x more common than Camaros and Challengers. It'll take a few years for the SUV to pass already sold 2 door mustangs.

Indeed. it's handily beaten by every other Ford brand SUV that's currently in production (except the Bronco that just launched days ago), including the somewhat divisive EcoSport. In fact, it's one of the lowest selling Ford branded vehicles period (again among those still in production):

And as you point out, comparing sales of different models right now is somewhat futile due to market conditions. Currently, almost no vehicle from any manufacturer has its sales limited by demand - it's all limited by supply constraints and logistics bottlenecks. And manufacturers, Ford included, are often being forced to choose between producing one model at the expense of another.

Obviously Ford didn’t think the Mach E could sell on its own merit so they slapped on the Mustang badge and put on the Mustang taillights so average Joe can feel cool.

Point of fact is that MME is capacity limited in its first year to ~50,000 units and production is sold out.

And the only thing in common the two vehicles share is the name Mustang. When the EV Mustang two-door coupe out sells it's ICE variant, then this stat will matter.

It's not like the customer comes into the dealership looking for a "Mustang" and chooses the E-Stang over the ICE-Stang because of the drivetrain.

Eh, then that's kind of the OP's point, isn't it? Because of the name, both cars are "Mustangs"? I think Ford is trying a branding theme and forging the Ford model names of the past in to "Families" of vehicles. The Mustang/Mustang Mach-E was first, and now the "Bronco", with the Bronco and Bronco Sport following; the Bronco Pickup is next. I don't see this any different than BMW relying on the "3-Series" heritage to sell 4-door Hatchback GT's, or and X3 SUV, or "M-Car" heritage to sell MX-SUVs.

I really think the long term plan is to turn the Mustang coupe into an EV and bank on the newly formed EV heritage of the Mach-E. From all accounts the Mach-E hits it out of the park as an EV. Once the Mach-E has built its heritage from this generation and the next generation, selling a Mustang EV Coupe 10 years from now will help transition Mustang from an ICE sports coupe to EV.

The Tesla Model Y and Model X and Model 3 are seriously butt-ugly ("I'm hideous Jerry, don't look."). The Mach-E has tons of style in it.

I totally agree, I have seen one on the road and the 1st thought in my head was "mustang my rear end, this is SUV!"
More Ford Edge than Ford mustang.

If Ford wanted to copy the Mustang formula, it would have given the Mach E a revolutionary design and not called it a freaking Mustang. If it is actually a decent car, then it would sell just as well with a brand new nameplate that would eventually become a legacy nameplate just like the Mustang, Bronco, Explorer, etc. Unfortunately, as seems to be typical with American automakers, they are too focused on the short term (mortgaging the Mustang name to snag a few extra sales) instead of the long term where the Mustang name could just become a hollowed nameplate similar to the Lincoln Continental which has not been relevant for decades. (BMW is guilty of this too, slapping M badges on literally everything and whatnot).

That's interesting because during our race today I was thinking about how misguided the retro-styling thing is. While dodge has pretty much cornered "retro-styling" with the challenger, I think Ford and Chevy need to move past it with cars like the Camaro and Mustang. It seems more that they cling to this to help increase sales, luring people in because it's a (insert classic car name here), but not because it's a damn good car. In some cases, they are damn good cars, but trying to retro-style rather than build the best goddamn car is misguided IMO. If you build a good car, then it sells, THEN it becomes the new "standard" for that car and the name becomes synonymous with that body style or year. This is kind of opposite of building an "ok car" and trying to sell it based on name and appearance.
