Tuning question

What is the trade off for tuning an E89 s35i? Worse milage? Why does the factory not just include the max power outage in the sport switch? Is increasing the turbo boost safe for the engine? Questions questions from a newbie. Well, previous Boxster and 4th BMW. First really fun, totally impractical BMW!

I had the Dinan flash in my 335 for 40,000 trouble free miles. The N54 motor has great tuning potential. It is easy to get an additional 80hp and 100lb/ft of torque with a flash or a piggy back computer. It totally tranforms the car. I am waiting for Dinan or another tuner to design a flash specifically for the Z4. I have a JB+ installed in the mean time.

Diana indicates they should have something out before the end of the year.

...and once again I have to ask, tuning possibilities for the 30i? love the engine in my 30i, but of course would love to tweak it also. anyone know if the old 3.0si had much in the way of tuning possibility? Hope Dinan or Schnizter or Hamann come out with something. Need More Torque!!

Good to know. I have called Dinan a couple times but never got any real answers. They told me they had a test car but no ETA on the flash.

I saw Steve Dinan about a month ago at a local dealership in So Ca. He mentioned they had an e89 on the dyno testing their flash and hoped to have a release before the end of the year.

He also mentioned something else that was interesting, and that was the tune for the n54 in the e89 was not really different than previous versions (i.e., 335i) , and the hp / tq figures should be the same as posted on his site for the other n54 cars. I asked him specifically about BMWs hp limitations for the e89 dct, but he indicated he wasn't really that concerned about it. He said that BMW was very conservative in their ratings, but Dinan has previously exceeded BMWs specs for the dct before. FWIW

I hope he offers a tune for the manual tranny. I am sure most Z4's have DCT's installed and that is what the test car has. I know there were 2 different tunes for the 335 depending on manual or steptronic tranny, different stages too. I figured the tune would be the same except for possible changes to compensate for the active handling throttle steering system (forgot what BMW calls this). I loved the stage 2 tune on my 335, can't wait.

That's entirely possible for the MT, but I didn't think to ask him about it.

He pretty much stated that what we see for the 335i tuning on his website would be applicable for the Z4 as well. The 3 series is hugely popular so I'm curious about the actual program for the e89 will be.

Yeah, should be exciting.

We are selling the new BMS Power Box for the NA 3.0L engines. Check out the info on my site http://psimotors.com/POWERBOXTUNERN52.aspx

It builds about 10hp under the curve and 5hp peak with throttle remaping that give the car the response it should of had from the factory. You may call me about ordering if you like.
