Z4 E89 / 3er E93 / 4er F33/F34 -Urgent recommendation to replace the hardtop relais
Hi guys,
In the German zroadster.com forum we currently had several cars with damaged hydraulic pumps. Today I got one damaged pump as well as the 2 pink relais from one of the forum members for further analysis. This is a seminal piece of work. I could not get the links to work. At least the analysis ones. I have an account as well, which I suggest others do. In the meantime, this link got me to your content:
http://www.zroadster.com/forum/index...-jahre.133521/ As I understand it, there are two identical relays you recommend bi-annual changing BMW P/N 12631742690 (https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...02#12631742690) We have this conversation also going on Spooolstreet. Filippo

Morning Filippo,
Thanks for your hint. I've updatd the 2 faulty analysis links. It's correct, there are 2 identical pink relais to be replaced regularly to avoid the damage of the very expensive hydraulic pump. |

Don't worry, the part number
12631742690 is correct. BMW TeileNr 12631742690 https://www.realoem.com/bmw/de/parts...&q=12631742690 |

I admit to not having done a lot of research. Where exactly are these relays and are they relatively easy to get to?
Update: I think I just answered my own question. I went and looked. It’s under the floor panel in the trunk, next to the battery. Last edited by Mayhem; 08-05-2018 at 11:37 AM.. |

2 new relays: $36
New pump: $3500 (what kind of frickin' pump costs $3500?) It's a no brainer. Ordered my new relays today. Thanks RobbiZ4 for this awesome post.

FCP Euro
http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-...ay-12631742690 Use a small screwdriver to release the tabs on the sides of the relays and pull them out. Couldn't be easier.

$2,700 from BMW of Fairfax for the pump, though I hope no one needs one.
On the relays, one can pop the covers and inspect them. My car is a 2011 - paid $30 for two new relays on eBay. I'll swap in new, pull the old ones and inspect them - if good I'll keep them as spares. Know that those relays are used on like 50 BMWs, so good to have in the toolbox. And .... those relays are known to fail on the other cars as they get older ... been that way for a long time. Filippo

Kinda wondering the same thing. Haven't heard of this specific type of failure on any of the Z4 boards but that certainly doesn't mean it hasn't happened. (how many times are expensive repairs made under warranty by drivers who have no clue what caused their cars to need service and never frequent the forums?)
Anyway I did go ahead and order since the relays are very inexpensive and certainly can't "hurt". |

The broken pump I've examined was driven by a 9 year old relay, that failed. Last edited by RobbiZ4; 08-22-2021 at 01:33 AM.. |

If they can't handle the load, I'd go for a better relay or do something about the motor start surge rather than simply replacing under rated relays for a fresh set of under rated relays. Does anyone have specification on the relays and the actual starting current on the motor? I have seen faulty motors kill relays. So cause and affect need to be established. |
