There are significant materials challenges with some of these ideas. The concepts are great, but the metallurgical precision and alloys get extreme real fast. Some of these have real bad corrosion issues, so you get a bunch of new challenges cropping up by solving one part of the system. There have been some near misses just due to this, flaws in critical reactor structure. Not that these pursuits aren't worth it, just that they get to be extraordinarily costly and regulated, because that's just the inherent nature. Like how aviation is heavily regulated, but to an even higher degree, due to the implications and risk exposure.

So there has been lots of discussions about the requirement to increase output and grid capacity to accommodate the switch to EV's and home heating, there is also the need for increased mining capacity to build the batteries.

If you know anything about the US electric grid, you know there is NO way that it will be able to support going all EV's by 2035. One major issue not addressed enough is that even if we have enough ways to generate enough electricity, we do NOT have anywhere near enough transmission lines to send the electricity where it is needed. Generating the electricity is simple; sending it around the country is hard. That is because time and time again, local communities go to court to stop the building of any new transmission towers. Also, nobody wants to have their land ripped up to bury transmission lines. NIMBYism will stop the ability to locate enough transmission towers and electric stations to allow for wide scale deployment. Until the next multi billionaire invents a way to transmit electricity WITHOUT wires, our electric grid will fail us.

This is a fascinating move because a) its a shortish timeline so we will all hopefully be around to see what a farce it will be and b) the wording is extremely sneaky......"must be able to run on electricity"......so it will allow PHEVs.

Watch hybrids explode, absolutely no way in the known universe we will sell even 15pc of new cars as pure EV by 2026. The time of the hybrid is coming faster than I expected. Toyota Canada executives will get hammered tonight, they'll just about be the only ones selling what people a) want and b) can afford.

Hybrids really seem like the realistic answer for the next 15-20 years. Let the battery technology get better, more power stations, improve the grid..........but we all know that's reasonable so it won't happen.

I'm planning to replace my daily Civic Hatchback with Prius Prime in the future. My civic's 180hp is more than enough for commuting at 40mpg on regular 87 gas.
