How to replace Valve Cover Gaskets and Oil Filter Housing adapter Gaskets
My 2011 Z4 35i started throwing up errors for parking brake and hot air blowing from vents. Unrelated to these, dealer found that it is time to replace 1. Valve Cover Gaskets and
2. Oil Filter Housing adapter Gaskets As it is very expensive to get it done at the dealership, I am thinking of doing these myself and picked up the parts from the dealership. I didn't find any good DIY for E89. I am a newbie and except replacing battery, I didn't do anything on the car. Can anybody tell what are the tools required for these operations. Appreciate any help. |

Don't try and look for E89 specific help. We have the same engine as in 3 series 335 E90 cars and 5 Series 535 E60 cars.
That is where you will find DIY info. I am suspicious that both of those are leaking on your 2011. If you don't see any oil then the dealer is just doing a "it will leak eventually so you might as well replace them now. You don't want any problems with this down the road" And they are right, in that they will leak eventually. But if they are not leaking now you can leave them as they are. I have a set of all of these gaskets sitting in my supply cabinet for when I will need to change them. |

It is unlikely that you valve cover gasket is leaking. It is very likely that you valve cover is cracked and needs replacing. Why did the dealer say that you need to replace your gasket? The valve cover usually develops a crack and that is what causes problems.
However, it you have any wrench turning skills this is an easy diy. The first think that you need to do is to remove the engine cover and inspect the valve cover for hairline cracks. |

Their note says "Valve Cover Gasket and oil filter housing gasket leaking". Service Advisor told me that it may be ok for 3 months. I will take out the engine cover ... what tools do I need ? Is it ok to follow instructions from this site ?

My valve cover gasket leak was indeed a cracked valve cover.
Dealer did the work twice. First time the extended warranty company paid for it. The second time the dealer had to eat the parts/labor themselves. |

I found this video. 2011 Z4 engine looks little different. Seems doable
However I am having a tough time finding tools required to remove the parts at O'Reilly's. Which size hex wrench do I need to remove the coil packs and the bolts around valve cover ? |

Ok. Come on. If you don't own any tools this probably is not for you.
Pay someone to do this for you. |

lol ... I am getting the tools one by one as and when required. Bought a few to replace the battery and wheel lug nuts. Just picked up hex keys set to remove the engine cover and a deep socket to remove bar over the engine. Trying to find sizes of hex wrench to remove the coil packs and the bolts around valve cover.

I believe I have all the tools required for this project. I had to stop because I couldn't get the coil packs out. Friend suggested that I can use a screwdriver to pull out the coil packs and I was able to do it. See the picture. I will start doing this on Thursday and hopefully can finish it
I am taking pictures and documenting each step and will post it here. |

Wow! For a guy without a lot of experience, that's quite a procedure. Not sure I would have gone there, Damn these German cars are over-engineered!
