Tire question
Newbie here so go easy.Bought a 2012 E89 in April. It only had 17,000 miles but the rear tires needed to be replaced. My question is why can’t I run a set of o225/35/19 to put on the rear instead of running the 255/30/19.I think the wheels are Called296 or something like that.I know I would have to find another set of front wheels, and don’t know how much different the car would handle. How easy are stock wheels to find?I might ad the the tires are stock Bridgestone run flats, that I would like to get rid of.Maybe a 225/40/19 all the way around.,non run flat

The question is *why* you wanna do that? So you can swap later on w your fronts? I'd never stray from the factory recommendations unless there's a very good reason.

I’m not a tyre, wheel, suspension, geometry expert. Take the following with a grain of salt. But I track –not the zed–, and enjoy performance street drives. If you don’t care for and don’t push for acceleration, corner exit speed, braking, oversteering, etc, then you ‘should’ be OK. Otherwise you’ll feel a diminishing in all those. I know I would.
I don’t know if 225/40 would fit in the front without rubbing. There are guys on the British forum that would know that. Let us know. Good luck. |

I do not know what engine your Z4 has but my 35is with winter 225 non staggered wheels is horrible to handle even on dry roads in warm weather. The rear end comes loose way too easy. That may be due to the tire compound, but I dont like how uncontrolable the car is under acceleration with that set-up. The stopping distance would also increase with less tire touching the ground.

Winter 225 in the rear has no grip and breaks traction way too easily and its not that my tires are old (got new set of Goodyear Ultragrip Performance+ tires last year). Also 225 looks funny in the rear aswell. Kind of too small and narrow.. Stock 255 looks way better, grips better. Just get rid of runflats and get some good tires like Michelin 4S tires. If you want to get a more comfortable ride then maybe consider downsizing from 19" to 18" wheels for more tirewall to cushion the ride.

Beware the dreaded BMW 296 wheels. They are highly prone to cracking and could be why the rear tires need to be replaced. Uneven wear, etc. Make sure to have the rims checked for cracks before spending money on tires.
