Unique top problem.

Hey guys

Recently picked up a 2010 Z4 sdrive35i.

I had purchased the car with the top being non functional. The seller said bmw told him it needed a new top and they couldn't figure out what was going on after a leak....after the leak was fixed.

Good news is the pump is fully functional....Long story short i purchased full left and right mechanisms with hydraulics cylinders and everything.

This is what happens:

Step 1: Windows roll down
Step 2: Back shell folds on front shell
Step 3: Trunk opens
Step 4: Front shell unlocks

Step 5 (Faulty step): Front shell comes off the windscreen crooked every time and almost always the left comes off the first then the right side.

Now to correct this I have done the following:
-Replaced passenger side hydraulic in the trunk
-Left side arm that was bent on visual inspection

This has not fixed my problem and the roof still comes off crooked as before. I plan to do the driver side hydraulic next.

Side note: I can stop pressing the button at step 4 and manually lift the top and fold it down with it catching anywhere so that tell me it has to be the hydraulics some where....am I right?

Any suggestions on what to attack next?

Also how do you read roof codes? I have Carly pro but it does no seem to show me any codes. Should I be using some thing else ?

I'm fairly new to bmw...always been a Audi guy

yeah, Carly is for beginner coders

you need the standard bmw tools and cable, find them at Bimmer Geeks download page and the cable from Bimmer Labs

install instructions are included and there are many videos on youtube as well

or I could help you do this, send me a PM if interested (my videos)

Hi - I have a 2014 E89.
Does ISTA+ need a licence fee to be paid?
I have roof problems - fault code "A568" - ID failure 27EH convertible roof top - and I bought Carly but - as you say - it is pretty poor when it comes to reporting roof (CTM) codes - i.e. I don't get anything useful.

What is the current version of ISTA+, and is INPA obsolete now?

Keep in mind, that the CTM is not very communicative. That is not a Carly issue. AFAIK, each stored error code from the CTM is always visible even with Carly.

But, there exist several roof issues, which don't provide any error code. In rare situations, the CTM stores absolutely wrong codes, i.e. hall sensor, when a microswitch struggles!

Hi - I am in Coventry, UK.
The roof is 95% closed, the trunk is closed perfectly but there is a 2cm gap between back roof and top roof, and a 2cm gap between top roof and windscreen. Also, the windows are fully OPEN so I am getting weather damage inside the car every day (even though I have covered the sides with plastic sheet).
I see two errors (out of a bigger list) from Carly that may be important:
Fault code: 00A670 Error fogging sensor 0xA670 / BSS error signal line BSS 0xA670
Fault code: 00A568 ID failure status hood / ID-failure status 27Eh top convertible
The fogging sensor seems fine in appearance.

Any ideas would be much appreciated! I need to get the windows raised as a matter of urgency.

The latter might be based on a broken hall sensor on the right hydraulic ram in the coupling lock. There are 2 hall sensors mounted on the ram. Another source of these effects might be the 2 microswitches on both coupling locks in the boot. Hall sensors can be replaced by the cheap E88 (~10€) hall sensors instead of the very expensive E89 (240€) hall sensors. Only the wiring has to be adapted.

The windows won't close until the roof is in an open or close position.

You can try to open the brass screw on top of the hydraulic pump for a max. of 2 turns, not more!! Then you should be able to move the roof panels as well as the trunc lid manually with the help of a 2nd person to a close position.

But if there are any sensor issues, the panel as well as the trunk lid will not lock and you won't get it into a stable closed position.

There are some garage suggestions in the UK on the Z4 Forum:

Thanks Robbi - that's helpful - it is always good to hear of a possible way forward.

So the Carly app wouldn't identify or notify me of a sensor failure?

Well, that's not a Carly thing! Same with other fault readers.
The CTM (cabrio top module) is not very communicative. I've developed a diagnstic system of my own to plot live data from the roof to identify timing and curious faults as well.

I've seen a guy get detailed CTM / roof sensor info with a SNAP-ON diagnostic device, but they are several $$$ grand I think. But it does show that the codes are present "somewhere" on the system.

Well, it's a bit more complicated than having only the "best" code reader. There are no hidden codes placed anywhere in the car! The correct timing is another key for a perfect working roof. Don't expect too much from even expensive devices.

Agree with you. I suspect he will need a dual channel oscilloscope to see the timing. It will be a challenge to find someone who knows how to use it and work on BMW.

Quite possibly a broken wire somewhere or either a faulty sensor etc.

I've you're struggling there's a BMW tech in Weedon - Carbon Sol, he replaced a sensor on my roof and has access to the full BMW fault checking package, very knowledgeable guy!

My car just developed fault, roof impaired. Code reader say hall sensor shell 2 fault. So i pushed on the cables from inside the cabin, there's a gap in the roof trim on the right, above right ear on RH drive cars. Sure enough the red roof symbols flickers on and off and the bongs come and go, as i push on the cable, so broken wire in there.
Well it lasted 12 years before i had my first broken wire.
When the weather warms up a bit i will fix it.
