Upon first seeing the photos with the silver mirrors and the bright chrome grills, it seemed a little too cute for my taste. But after seeing the video, it's better than my inital impression. Will reserve final judgment after seeing it in metal.
But my nagging question is this: Why doesn't BMW include brake and suspension upgrades? It's frustrating that BMW keeps playing around on the fringes and doesn't want to commit to a full blown ///M. Ok, but paste ///M insignia all over it but not complete the step? It reminds me of the 60' and early-70's US muscle car era. There were a hand full of bad ass factory muscle cars out there (that pale in comparison to today's cars). But, for the average Joe, they gave him the appearance of muscle but without the substance by packaging the cars with different names, cool looking insignias, paint schemes, louder mufflers, etc. And, they would make a bunch of superficial changes like that every couple of years so Joe just had to go out trade in his "old" model for the new hotness. Under the paint and insignias it was a regular car that really wasn't that hot in the final analysis. The marketers are the blame. We need to round 'em all up and send them to an armed detention camp in North Dakota for a couple of winters. That will teach a lesson. Last edited by teagueAMX; 12-13-2009 at 04:43 PM.. |

WTF is up with the Audi S side mirrors? That's all I need... brand confusion.
Sales must be really shitty for BMW to be releasing bumper updates so soon after launch of the E89. While I definitely think the front bumper treatment is a night&day improvement over the previous, the rear looks out of place... like the Z4's having trouble pooping out shit. Bubble ass is not becoming of it. Interior updates I cannot complain about. The new option looks absolutely wicked! I suspect that BMW's banking on the fascia updates to carry it's ECU enhancements to sale, as nobody in their right mind would pay for just improved engine management without looking at aftermarket for comparison. My guess will be that there will be more unlocking of the ECU as the years go by. 10mm lowering... that's pretty conservative since the E89's still riding high as if on stilts. 25mm lowering would have been better. And AUTO only for the is? FAIL! |

haha, nice. maybe they should add the letters BMW and put a roundel on each end of the sentence. and a Z4 badge on the hood too since we don't have every angle badged yet! this is getting ridiculous!

Why mess with perfection?
I don't see a need for this model. As I posted on another thread, why does BMW feel they need to dilute this model line? Maybe if they offered a carbon fiber roof, now that would at least be a radical difference warranting discussion about upgrading. I have to echo a previous post if sales of the Z4 have been anemic, is this a knee-jerk response to try and boost sales?

Zee4 V Zed4
Never thought of this before but in the US its pronounced Zee4 while in Europe its a Zed4. I prefer the Zed4 - Zeds dead baby, Zeds dead.
Don't like the M-sport wheels. Guess I like multi spoke wheels a lot better.

here's my thought...
they sack the full M version because of the economy, but they know people are gonna want the latest and greatest, so they remap the engine (which is the same as the 35i and for $600 i can make just as powerful), make the sport shocks standard, change the steering wheel (BTW i love my shiny steering wheel), switch the front and rear spoiler, throw diff wheels and charge more for the same thing... It's a front and rear facia update. Car Manufacturers have been doing this for years. I've never read or hear anyone with that kind of a reaction to a simple front/rear facia update. Last edited by BlueZ4AZ; 12-13-2009 at 06:48 PM.. |

The DCT is not an automatic transmission. It can be driven like an automatic and is as smooth as an automatic but its a dual clutch computer controlled manual. With the paddles or shifter, you can drive it like a manual. You just don't have a clutch or an H pattern.

BMWs hp & tq figures are underrated regardless, and it's $0 cost for BMW to flash the ecu at the factory with any code they choose. They've got to put bumpers, wheels, upholstery, etc., on the car anyway and nothing they are installing on the "s" as an upgrade is any more expensive than the normal materials they use for the 35i. And they brag about the 10 mm drop, but the 35i Adaptive M Suspension does that already. So they have combined some already standard options with some no cost visual changes and likely will charge another $10k US for it. Like I said, it looks like BMW is using the US auto manufactures playbook from the 60's and 70's. They need to get all the marketing guys and lock 'em away. |
