Does this work for the z4?
Can't you just use the power/ jumper posts near the engine?

If the battery is connected, yes. In my case I had disconnected the battery terminal, so this would not work. If your battery was completely shot, it probably wouldn’t work either.

Were you using a battery charger or another battery? A battery charger will not work if your battery is disconnected, won't see the load and will not turn on.

Well this has happened to me this morning.. I cannot get into the trunk!!

Car starts and drives, but obviously got some electrical gremlins as the dash doesn't work or other electrics, roof mechanism etc. I was getting a load of random warning lights before the dash went out. Called the recovery guy, but definitely got 14.8 volts, so no issue with the battery or charge.

So how the hell do I get into the boot. Half my life is in there! As it's a European model I don't have the ski hatch or storage compartment others speak about so that's not an option and no emergency release.

It's with the garage, but fail to see how they can help.

Appreciate any help, BMW were useless on the phone.

Hey Robert.

Sorry, mad few days with work....

Well diagnosis is new roof module & rear brake module £1262 all in, they were both water logged!!

Thanks for your help in getting the garage into the boot, I really was in a panic!

I'll take a look at the boot seals again when I get the car home. Thinking a few drainage holes might not be a bad idea.

Thanks again.

What?
Never heard about a defective roof module before!
Some detailled photos appreciated to confirm this diagnostic. The roof module calls CTM and it is nearly perfectly protected against water.

What the hell has happened to the car? A moneymaker garage?
There are no holes to be opened! That is old school knowledge not adaptable to an E89. Keep away from any damage action. There are other known sources of water.

What about ypur plan driving to Germany? And last question, may I get your module for further examination?

This story sounds really curious to me.

Morning,

It's a long story. I knew I had a water leak... but had been keeping an eye on it and was mopping out water now and again. Had a huge downpour last week didn't get round to it, so both modules were swimming in water I already knew where it was leaking, just hadn't got round to fixing it

I know the owner of the garage, so don't think it's a moneymaker for them. In fact when I went in to collect my possessions they had the modules sitting on the radiator to try and dry them.

Wasn't planning on taking my car to Germany anyway, but a friends.

Yeah could send it. What do you plan to do with it out of interest?

Graeme

Ok, that water is coming through the 2 vents behind the rear bumper. They got replaced by a BMW callback around 2010 - or even not. Should be replaced immediately, the costs are about 30-50 €. You can touch it i.e. on the left side of the above picture.

The CTM can be opened and the internal circuit board can be taken off for drying without any risk. All the plugs should be dried as well.

I would put the CTM into my car and check the functionality. As I do have a diagnostic system for the E89 roof (like an EKG), I'm able to track and plot each roof signal.

Thanks for that. Do you happen to know the part number? My car is a 2010, so could well have be the older style.

Part No. 64226909340, 2 pieces are required for both sides, the rear bumper has to be removed.

Note:
I've update the 2 links in my former message

Thanks, will get a couple ordered up. I did check those during my initial water leak test and couldn't see any water coming in from there, but no harm I guess whilst all the trim is stripped out.

Interesting. Till now, I didn't identify a water ingress from the top, aka trunc lid.
The vents are opened by air pressure while closing the doors or the roof. If it doesn't close exactly or opens while driving, water might get into the trunc.

All E89 I've seen until now with similar water problems were from 2009/2010.

You can see in my photos above where the water is clearly dripping in from the top seal. Found someone else on the z4-forum who had the same issue, so he just removed it and silicon sealed it to make sure all the rain water was channeled out by the lights.

OK.
Do you have a photo from the right side as well? That's the place where the cabrio top module (CTM) is located in the trunc below a cover.
On the left, there is either the tv module (as in my car) or nothing placed below this compartment box.

No photos, but I know the polystyrene box was filling up too and I was mopping it out. Suspect the water was seeping through from below as there was water underneath it.

Really kicking myself from not taking a more proactive approach earlier

Well, another source of water often are the backlights. There are in total 12 generations of backlights with different types of seals. Only version "-12" seems to fit perfect over the years.

Has there been any replacement on your car before or are both backlights still the original ones?

Have a look at the following:

Yes rear cluster have been replaced, the old ones were full of water (and green slime). I've removed the new ones a few times and there's no indication water is getting in. However, the new one does only have two securing pins\bolts, so I need to silicon or blank off the other hole.

This will hopefully become less of an issue going forward as I'm moving to a new house with a double garage, so it won't get wet very often. I still want to resolve it though.

Correct, new ones only have 2 bolts. BMW in addition delivers a transparent label/sticker to close the hole in the middle before mounting the new clusters.

Graeme,

Thanks for die additional pics.
Interestingly those pics are from mid of June 2019. Does this mean, that the water has done its work for more than 3 months?

Unfortunately yes. I stripped back all the boot trim back in June. As I mentioned before, I had been keeping an eye on it and mopping up any water each week, but clearly the weekends rain was just too much for it.
