X1 Mechanic Madness and pictures of "Protective Undercoating"

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I have a 2020 X1 I got used with about 15k miles. I have had it about a year and a half now, and here are my repairs:

- A/C compressor went out (replaced under warranty)
- Front Brakes worn at 20k miles (uneven wear, replaced under warranty)
- Warning light came on brake fluid needed to be flushed/filled
- Brought it in for service at dealer, was informed they actually did this when they replaced the brakes, they forgot to reset the milage in the computer for the alert. Was informed my rear axels were leaking oil/grease and needed full replacement (under warranty)
- Went in again and got these replaced, noticed about 2 weeks later they forgot to fully re-attach my exhaust. There was also some fresh look grease sprayed like a skid mark under the back...
- went into today to leave the car there and the intake person told me the grease is a "protective undercoating". I asked why its just sprayed in one blob randomly...doesn't make any sense this is anything done on purpose. He said oh - sometimes it just squirts out of places randomly. I was...speechless. Here is my protective undercoating:

Yep, agreed. For sure it's leaking out and being sprayed in that pattern.

Not sure whether you should go back to the dealer and rub this fact in their face and go as high up that management chain as you can, or just say go elsewhere.

Probably the dealership, or at least a dealership, for warranty work. But I'd be pretty mad about the lying or at least ineptitude.

Sad story so far, mostly BMW's are better than their poor reliability rumors.

For sure I will be having the dealership pay for it and fix it, I don't have the energy to go somewhere else pay for myself and try to get BMW to pay for it.

But main issue is they sent me home with a car that was not fixed right, AND not even put back together!

Lastly, to try and tell me this is protective undercoating is mind boggling. I want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt he was looking at the actual undercoating before he saw the grease spray, but...I specifically said "there is grease sprayed all over".

Is this any sort of safety issue?

Nope. Not any time soon anyhow. Someday sure it could corrode and even fall apart but that'll be ages from now.

Gotcha thanks. I was more worried the axles were re-installed incorrectly because they were leaking grease, and that would cause a safety issue, not the grease itself corroding the underbody.

I am thinking there's a split in the boot, and where it's opened the grease is coming out. When it spins the centrifugal force throws the grease out. Eventually an open boot covering an axle with no grease would get water and dirt and whatever else inside and corrode. Didn't even think about the grease itself as corroding, so no I didn't think you were asking that

^ exactly that.

I would bring it to another dealer and have them replace the axle again and redo the work. That job looked rushed and the tech didn't even care to double check.
