My Z4 recently started taking longer to start on cold starts and I'm trying to figure out the cause. This happens on most cold starts. But, not every cold start. Sometimes it fires right up even though it's cold.

2013 35i with Dinan Stage 3 tune. No other mods.

The battery is strong (less than 1 year old). It cranks normally but just takes longer than it should to actually fire up and start running. Once running, it runs smoothly. On warm starts, it starts promptly like it should.

Thoughts? My thinking…

Bad tank of gas? (Could be coincidence but this seemed to start the first cold start after filling up)

Ignition coils/spark plugs need to be changed? (Pretty sure these were done within the last 2 years)

HPFP? Were those a problem on later model year E89s?

Thanks all!

Usually a symptom of a leaky injector. Many threads on how to diagnose.

Can any decent Indy shop do the coding or dealership only?

Anyone good with coding should be able to code the injectors. You can do it yourself with a laptop, Dcan cable and INPA.

Bob20124 do you have any recommendations for index 12 injector kits? Usually I would go to FCP Euro but they don't seem to be selling them anymore.

Sorry been away. check multiple BMW dealers online for best price and availability. Only buy genuine injectors. You cannot mix index 12 with any below index 11, you would need to replace the full bank (1-3) or (4-6). If they are all early index I would bite the bullet and replace all 6. Don't forget to code.

Thanks Bob. It seems that fuel injector prices are pretty bonkers right now. Like $2600+ for a set of 6. Bummer!

There were special part number versions offered at a discounted price as part of extended warranty programs but sadly they’ve been discontinued…

I ended up paying around £1,500 UK for a set of index 12 parts..

Prices started to creep up after discontinuing the extended coverage part #and supply issues. I'm sorry I didn't buy a spare set back then. I'm sure over time my existing index 11 and 12s will start leaking. presently 9yrs (50k mi) on 4 index 11s and 5yrs (27k mi) on 2 12s.

I just had my HPFP replaced and the dealer told me I still have the original index 9s and they seem to be OK @ 70k miles. Go figure!

I had about the same problem on my 2009 Z4 3.0. But once started the RPM didn't stabilize, and seemed to hunt on the tac. I had it looked at my local Indy shop. They checked all sorts of problems and came back with a dirty throttle body. They removed it and cleaned it thoroughly, problem solved. Good Luck with yours, my fix was little $ compared to injectors.
