2009 z4 sdrive35i rattle n54

Just got it today and noticed the rattle when decelerating.

Is this a wastegate failure ?

I have 48 hours and 250 hours miles to return it.

Thank you in advance.

try this

iThe rattle can barely be heard. I think the exhaust sound is covering most of it. Try it in front of the car away from the exhaust outside the garage.

It sounds really similar to when my waste gates failed (2009 Z4 35i). Try revving up to 4000 RPM in neutral and let go of the accelerator, sound should be lot more distinct. I had BMW dealer repair it under SI B01 02 12 service information bulletin last year at zero cost. There are workarounds (JB4 waste gate rattle fix, tightening the arm on the waste gate, and etc.) but I feel like they are temporary solutions.

Additional details on the warranty
8 Years/82,000 miles
Delivery Date: 5/21/09 (confirmed they use delivery date, not production date with BMW USA)
Service Date: 4/12/17
Warranty Expiration Date: 5/21/17

I think your warranty would have expired by now, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

yes im out good on miles but 1 year out of warranty.

my good bimmerfest friend who is a master mechanic at bmw did say with a letter from uppermanagement I may get by with one of those goodwill half way coverage from bmw ( i forgot the term)and be out like 1k.

But since i did purchase warranty for the car, would it be good for 1k driving and three months?

it seems to be a common problem I did not notice on the n54s

It's unlikely to go from rattle to failure right away. From my understanding, the waste gate control arm loosens up, failing seal properly at low rpms. The rattle will get worse over time and it will fail eventually.

I drove on it for 6 months+ with the jb4 fix with minimal noise. Look into MHD waste gate fix also since it will be lot cheaper.

Thank you. I took it to Ikonic a garage in LA.

Got it looked over. Seller had dealer adjust wastegate arm. Noticed paint on it.

Seller is a small dealer so I got bumped up to a better Endurance warranty 3 year 35k

31 day waiting period and it's not too shabby compared to the sort of crappy warranty before where I had to do an oil change every 3 month or 6k miles (lol)

Extended white napa leather deepsea blue. Twin turbos , endless sky. Tha k you for your insight and great suggestions nontoxic
