Storage Drawer Next To Steering Wheel

Is the small storage drawer located just below and off to the side of the steering wheel an available option in the United States? I seem to recall reading that this was only available on vehicles in markets other than the U.S.

The drawer can be seen in the video below on YouTube at about the 8:48 mark.

If anyone has one, how useful is it? Also is there storage underneath the tray that is used for iPhones if you have the Apple adapter?

Thanks for any thoughts or pictures.

You have to order the storage package.

Well... all I can say is that it wasn't included in the "storage package" that I ordered. When I questioned it... I was told exactly what you were.

Something about US regulations mandating soft materials where your knees could impact during a wreck.

That's what I have heard.

It's great for a small bootle of whisky. Never leave home without it.

This is similar to the storage shelf available on MINIs sold in Europe but not available on US cars. You can find some dealers willing to order one for you but I don't think you can order it as an option on a car for delivery in the US.

Thanks for that. Interesting. I was unaware of the storage package when I got my vehicle.

So we don't have that option in the US, but we get to keep our left knee cap in the event of an accident. I need both knee caps, so it sounds like a fair tradeoff.

Interestingly, I have seen photos of the new X3 in the US with a storage unit in exactly the same place as it is in the Z4.

Why would X3 owners' knees be any different from Z4 owners knees?

the Storage Drawer can be retrofitted pretty easily, only requires part 2 & 6 below. Image borrowed from http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E8..._panel_bottom/
