Four stoke or two stroke dirt bike?

OK dirtbike guys, why four stroke over two stroke?I am looking into a minibike for my 10-year-old and I will get myself something to ride along with him.

4 stroke for power

2 stroke for light weight and maintenance

My son wanted a dirt bike but I thought they were too dangerous. We went on a Mexican vacation and there was a place that taught and rented small motorcycles so I thought lets see how it goes. I have my motorcycle license and use to ride fast bikes but sold my bike when I had children. Well he got his chance and later went off the trail and into the jungle and got bruised up. He never asked again and considers them dangerous himself. Every kid is different.

Besides every kid being different, it also depends on where you reside... If you live in Manhattan or Los Angeles, I wouldn't give my child a two wheeled vehicle... Rural suburban neighborhoods? I ride so I don't see the harm... City ? No, absolutely not... It's not the rider themselves so much (although there are plenty of squids around) but it's the other drivers just not paying attention... I've been hit 3 times on the streets of LA and there's the countless more times I've avoided accidents by the skin of my teeth...

Sounds like he's responsible and has a good head on his shoulders... Making sure he's geared up at all times and is a responsible rider, I don't see the harm... Just as long as you aren't in a major metropolitan city - IMO... Not for a child...

My twins are about to be 4. Hoping to get them some Osets (electric dirt bikes) for Christmas.

So my answer would be you are LATE getting him a bike

**Edit** WTF happened to the 3 page thread I actually replied to?

I always found four strokes somewhat easier to ride as you don’t have to get in the power band like you do on a two stroke.

Ride the torque!

Grew up with two stokes and for dirt riding that’s what I have to get to this day. The instant acceleration, fast revs and power for size not to mention the scream of the engine is exhilarating. I miss riding MX.
If you’re just tooling around the woods with your kids and not seriously racing or riding hard then go 4 stroke.

Based on how you plan to ride, 4 stroke all day long. There's no two ways about it.

Folks who want to go as fast as possible, jump as far as possible, and beat the ever-loving shit out of their bike without worrying about breaking it, will want a 2 stroke.

Meanwhile, you want to put around on some trails with your kid. You want quiet, clean burning, reliable, easy starting, and lots of low end torque for low speed fun. 4 stroke is the name of the game for you, sir.

4 stroke, then you don't have to mess around with mixing the gas.

How tall is your son?

I'd buy yourself a 2 stroke and 4 stroke for the kid, see how he likes riding and let him get some experience. If he seems like he wants to ride more agressivly sell it and put him on a bigger 2 stroke, by that time he will probably need a bigger bike anyway.

I go way back to the days of only two strokes for dirt bikes. So, I am somewhat biased toward them as I really like the power delivery and the simplicity.... and the sound...

But even with all that bias, 4 stroke is the way to go for everything except the extreme performance / weight that a two stroke offers.
