NBT EVO retrofit

My wife has started to become a bit jealous of the functionality of my '17 F34, so when bimmerretrofit started offering the NBT EVO retrofit for the E89 I decided to get one. I bought it in January, but finally had the time and opportunity to actually do the install this week.

While it is a complete retrofit, and the actual car to NBT interface is plug and play, the installation is a lot of custom work. The 8.8 inch screen does fit nearly perfectly in to the Z4's CID flip up module, but you will need to modify both the screen (cutting off a lot of metal to get it to fit in the available space ), and the CID module itself to get the screen to fit flush with the plastic. I then used some 3M double sided adhesive to mount it. I was unable to get the actual electronic open/close to continue working as the motor controller actually plugs in to the old screen for some of it's signals (given enough time and motivation I could probably get this to work, but it's fine as it is, basically a manual open/close screen ... the motor gets re-installed, just without the wiring to make it work)

You'll need to pick up the mic signal in the steering column, and unfortunately the retrofit package provided the wrong variant of the plug (male 3 pin) for this as pretty much everything but the z4 uses the same mic module which has a female 3 pin plug, whereas the z4 uses a mic module that puts out a male 3pin plug, so I needed the female version, luckily I happened to have a connector from some previous installations that I could crib to make the connections I needed.

The iDrive touch controller requires some small modifications to the trim in order to fit the module in, I then managed to find a few spots that with a screw and washer I could get a solid 3 point mount on the controller.

You'll need to remove the old CIC face plate and mount that to the trim (there are 3 spots that you can fit a screw in to to mount it solidly), and then plug the cable from the eNBT adaptor in to it.

At the same time as all of this, I also installed a backup camera a in the left license plate light spot (provided as an add-on to the retrofit kit). Their adaptor also provides the dynamic steering lines on the camera view.

The retrofit isn't cheap and it's a pretty substantial amount of labor (including a lot of custom modifications to make things fit), but the end result is pretty awesome IMHO.

Maybe? I didn't get the touch screen (wasn't offered at the time I ordered it) but it does CarPlay and Android Auto, so perhaps Android + touch would work that way (I've never used Android Auto, so I can't say for sure if that seems plausible)

Quality DIY right here folks!

What about AC control? Is there anything that does not work? (Besides the screen motor)

BMW assist, and also HD and satellite radio are lost (those two are a function of what Evo unit was available for the retrofit though, and would be restored if a different unit with that functionality was available)

But as far as climate controls and all that, those are still 100%

Rowat,

I'm about to install a Bimmerretrofit rear view camera. Any tips on routing the cable from the trunk to to the console?

Thanks,

Bruce

I fished the wire from the license plate light area to the right tail light area, through the grommet to enter the trunk, then along the right side along with other wiring, and then entered the passenger compartment where it came out behind the speaker/seat belt plastic, then along the door sill and up across the plastic trim above the passenger footwell.

I'll be curious if your camera directly fits or not. On my wife's car the hole was a bit too large for the light to clip in, I cut a small piece of aluminum and double sided taped it to the inside of the bumper so the light could clip in. It seemed like the holes were arbitrarily large though (bigger than they needed to be for the existing lights), so I'm wondering if they are all that way or not.

Rowat, where did you get the housing for the display and also does the motorized open and close function still work on your NBT EVO set up? I am thinking about pulling the trigger on mine. Thanks brother!!

Housing is the original housing from the car, I just had to modify it (grind down some plastic) to get the new screen fit flus. The motorized open and close does not currently work... the signal feeds for that actually comes through the old display. I keep hoping to find time to look at what exactly those signals are and try to build a circuit to still open on power up and close on power down, but just haven't had the time. I left all the gearing in place, so it'll stay up or stay closed and you can just push it up and down easily, but it doesn't power open/close.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but it is a DIY thread for NBT retrofit.

I'm currently installing Bimmer Retrofit's NBT kit with rear camera into the car and wanted to say a big thanks to ROWAT and PENNBRUCE for their install threads. I ran into the same problems with the mic and had to remove the pins and crimp them to their new wire.

My question is about the TCU, ULF and Sirius radio (my car is a 2010 an doesn't have a combox apparently). Did you remove the TCU and ULF? After connecting the MOST cable to the quadlock did you have to terminate the MOST cable with MOST loop isolator or disconnect it from the MOST hub (not even sure where that is) as per the install manual? Was there anything else you needed to remove or capture like the aux cable? The instructions are a little vague and there aren't any e89 specialists in my area to ask.

Thanks again for sharing your install experience. I may add to this thread when I am done with the extra photos and challenges that I encountered.

Does any of you have wireless Carplay ? And did you ever get the electric motor for the open/close operation to work?

I ended up with a non-iDrive Z4 and now that the warranty expired that'll get adressed
The kinda straightforward option seems to be CIC + Carplay interface. But I'm trying to investigate the options to fit something newer. The car is a keeper so cost is a non-issue.
