for $500............I think I'd go for the JB4.

Do you get charged $100 each time you have to send the BMW code
in to be 'massaged'? That could get expensive if there were a few
DME updates from the factory.

I looked at JB4 closely and was going to go that direction... until someone else noted that you have to remove the thing before going in to the dealer for scheduled service. Even if you don't the visible signs of "tampering" with the ECU enclosure can be visible. Also, with jumpers & harnesses etc, there is more of a chance of failure and even the bending or breaking of OEM components on the install and removal.

Ultimately it was the ease of use with the ESS unit that sold me. They have a very good reputation too.

Also very different products.

One is designed to "trick" the ECU and the other remaps the original factory ECU software. Remapping the original factory software takes more knowledge, is more sophisticated and has a higher degree of difficulty then adding a plug in harness to the signal. We feel it is best that the vehicles built in adaptation and safety control systems always know what is going on, especially when turning up boost. This allows the ECU to make corrections on the fly when needed depending on conditions and allows for issue free ownership. You can also do more to change the way a vehicle performs and drives when you have 100% control over the entire operating system.

This is what I was telling people even before the ESS tune was announced for the N54-a flash tuning solution 'at-home' where you could download maps would take the market by storm if it performed as well or better than the piggybacks like the JB4 etc

Thanks for the good information guys. May have made up my mind as well as far as which direction I go when I finally get my Z4.

Quick question, I can find 92 octane pretty easily here, but 93 is hard to come by. Would I be able to run Stage 2 with 92 octane or would I need to stick with stage 1?

You can run stage 2 on 91 octane.

So what is the expected longevity of the turbos with this remap? Won't the turbos die much quicker due to the increased boost?

Hey Roman, why kind of numbers are you getting with 91 octane on stage 2? I thought that stage 2 had a minimum of 93 octane?

DirectFlash Stage 2 :
Top Speed Governor: Removed
RPM Limit: 7200RPM
Fuel requirement: 93US/98Euro
Horsepower: 400 DIN (Stock 306) - 390DIN if used with stock intercooler
Torque: 550NM (Stock 400NM)

We have mapped stage 2 so that it is safe to run on 91 octane. It will make a bit more power on 93. I will have some dyno info soon but expect around 350 WHP SAE.

Wow, nice! I may have to order one of these soon, I'm still waiting for my car to come in. Eagerly anticipating the dyno info on the 91 octane...

Awesome. I was under the impression that I needed 93 octane to run stage 2 as well. Glad to hear it works with 91!

Interesting thread about the ESS Tune software. Living in Sweden and hopefully soon upgraded my Z4 3.0Si to a sDrive 35i I wonder what the ESS stage 2 will perform when running the 35i on 95 or 98 which is standard in Sweden, any one knows??

Hey Roman, so what's the answer to the question? How is HP and TQ altered by pumping 91. You said that you mapped Stage 2 to run safely on 91 but the fuel requirement used to be published at 93, is this an altered map to the old Stage 2 map or did you just realize that it is safe to run 91 on it? Otherwise, if I already have Stage 2 on my DirectFlash, do I need the 'new' Stage 2 map to run 91 on it, or is my existing map fine?

Also, how is fuel efficiency affected by the remaps? What is MPG for the respective maps? This is also information I hoped would be published.
