That "normal" knocking sound when shutting off the engine...
Am I alone in my concern over this? I mean, I know basically why this happens...counter-weights rotating in different directions kinda clattering together, but man, it just sounds rough. It kinda sounds like junk when you shut if off and all this noise comes from the engine...kinda embarrassing when people turn and cock their heads at why a car like this makes that noise. Essentially, what I am getting at is whether or not I am alone with the noisy car? Anyone else experience this and perhaps taken it in to have it examined? This is on a 30i...don't know if the 35i is plagued with this but I would assume so

Must try that, as I noticed mine makes a bit of a clunk when you press the STOP button.

Like others, when I turn my car off, I'm pressing on the clutch while I'm putting the car into first and turning on the e-break before pressing the start/stop button. Never heard a knocking noise from the engine.

Of course you are going to hear clunking if you turn off the car while in gear. You would get the same noise if you stalled out or stopped at a light without engaging the clutch or throwing it in neutral.

the "clunk" is heard if you are in neutral (manual trans) and shut the engine off without depressing the clutch. its more of a heavy object rattle. Never was one to put the car in gear when i shut it off. just seems to me that it is putting additional stress on the trans, however minimal, that i don't need since everything is flat right around where i live. but as for my rattle...depressing the clutch definitly does the trick to eleminate it!
