Can spammers be hijacking old user names?

I marked a post as spam a little while ago that had the same subject and content as this one.

This new one however is from a user that has been around for years and has valid posts although he hasn't posted recently. Just wondering.....

Anything is possible. People fall victim to phishing campaigns on a daily basis, just gottra be smart and catch the spam as we see it

This one by user cgsmith10. Joined 2016, had normal posts, none since 2016 and now this spam.

Edit - And another. Same spam post from bmw5sport - valid member, last post 2021

Let me know if I should stop notifying when I see this. Don't want to be a pain in your ass.

No pain whatsoever, to the contrary you are making this a better place. just make sure to report it as spam using the dots on the top right of the post, and magic will happen 👍

What does his profile show? Long time member with real posts? Any itrader (previous sales) shown?

Or is it a new member with no posts that wants to communicate via text because they don't have rights to private message?

Same way you'd investigate anything you are considering buying privately.

Are the pictures actual pics or screenprints?
Reverse image search to see if the pics show up anywhere else
Search the VIN and pull a carfax if you can
Check the seller's profile to see if they post like a real person or are only here to sell (not automatic negative, but could be a red flag)
Google search their username - people often use the same name on multiple sites
Communicate with the seller - do they respond like a normal person, are they super eager to complete the sale, are they unwilling to send additional pictures?

Probably plenty of other tips too
