Talk to me about wraps

Long story short, been shopping sports cars for near 2 years, have it narrowed down to 911 Vert. Really want a 997 GTS but prices in Canada, all in (taxes etc), are a bit ridiculous at about $100K to $115K.

Willing to consider an 'S' but like the wide body so will consider 4S with sports seats. 99% seem to be silver, grey or black, really narrowing my options as I'd like something bolder.

Long story short, who has had a wrap and who can walk me through the pros and cons? Before and after pictures and any recommendations in the GTA?

related by tangent... 997 GTS is worth the $$$. They've been fairly steadily rising since 2016, but if you watch for a period and are willing to get one from far away you should be able to find one that is closer to what you'd like to spend.

I've always been anti wrap until I went to SEMA last year and was amazed at how far the quality has come. I still prefer paint, mainly due to the wrap install process and slight concern with installing/removing, but quality wise I no longer consider them inferior.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for...if you go with a high quality installer you likely won't have anything to worry about and will never question the choice.

Don't do it. Whenever you sell the car you're going to turn off a lot of buyers with a wrap too. There's no way to know what the condition of the paint is underneath without removing the wrap. I've also seen wraps take paint off the car when removed. My first thought when I see a car for sale with a wrap on is "what's wrong with it?"

Nah the price is the price, weather it is in the US or Canada the total comes out to over 100K CDN. That's like 30K more than an S, getting a bit stupid.

Surprised at the lack of interest here as i have seen some impressive wraps.

I think I'm missing something. You want a 911, but haven't found one yet and you're thinking about wrapping it. Find a car you like, that doesn't need a wrap. For the life of me I don't see the attraction to wraps other than they can be removed.....but a decent wrap won't be cheap, so then your alternative is paint....or buy the car you want with he paint colour you want. Lots of Porsches out there. Go talk to Pfaff and give them your wish list and let them find it for you, or lurk on Autotrader to save a few bucks.

I had my last NSX wrapped from black to white because I previously had a black NSX (my first one) and then a silver one, but wanted a white...so I gave up trying to find one as they are rare and just bought another black one and had it wrapped white to give it an NSX-R type look.....

Wrap is the way to go by far on cars like those and Porsches and other high end cars that you don't want to devalue by changing the paint color.

They look great and protect the original paint at the same time for a fraction of the price of a paint job....just be sure to use the best shop around and not some one day wrap joint.

I sold it last summer but had it almost five years and the wrap still looked like new paint.

and speaking of Porsche's that is what I sold it for....a white one of course

i would only consider it if the car was a long term keeper like over 4-5 years. Because at the end you will have to toss that $5-7k wrap job in the trash before selling. Nice wheels like BBS or HRE can also help a somewhat boring color pop a little bit... and you can recoup a good chunk of the money when you sell.

like others said finding a high end shop is the most important part.

THis is not complicated. 90% of 997's are grey, silver or black, i don't want to drop 80K and be driving something so conservative and my last 4 cars were black. Trying to find a red/blue/white/yellow 997 with a black interior and properly option is needle in a haystack stuff.

I am exploring the idea of a wrap so if the right silver/black/grey one comes along I can pounce on it if I wat to go down that route.

Car would be a keeper yes, ideally I never sell it. There are a few guys on Rennlist that have used a new spray on wrap that looks pretty dang good in photos.

I wouldn't spend $100k on a car that I don't like the color only to spend $5k-$7k (price from above), on another color. From what I understand any scratches or nicks in the wrap can't be fixed and then the money spent is completely thrown away when you sell it. Part of this is I just don't care that much about the color and find lots of options look good. I don't like black cars because of the hassles to maintain but otherwise am pretty open to options.

The detail shop I use and love are starting to offer the spray wrap. It's strange stuff and looks like paint. They will do my Z4C for $1,100 for even color changing (not doing that one) and I'm thinking about changing my color regularly for the heck of it.

It's 2020....dang near 2021. Wraps have come a long way in just the last 12 months, let alone since their inception. I have a strange feeling that some of the responses might be coming from folks who have wrapping tech from 3 year ago in their minds eye. Get a reputable shop, like anything 70% of it is in the prep. If the surface has been properly prepared and the wrap is of high quality your going to be happy and the paint underneath will be just fine. The new spray on wrap looks very intriguing.

Throwing this out again. Through a friend of a friend of a friend I have an inside line on a 997, good shape, good options and the price is OK for the current INSANE market. It is, as usual, bog stock silver. Finding anything not silver/black/grey SERIOUSLY reduces options.

He wants a vert so the bat car doesn't worky. Wraps look great if done by a good professional shop. Expect 3 to 5 yrs of looking good depending on how much you drive and how you treat it.

That is WELL over 100K.

Say it sells for 75K. Add 5% BAT fee so we are at what 79K. 79 x 6% import fee is $84K. In Canadian dollars that is $106CDN plus 13% tax so I am out what $120K plus shipping is $2K.

It's a solid $120K, for that price i'd buy one locally. Buying from the USA makes no sense right now.

A decent GTS vert here is, all taxes in, about 110K or so. A 911S is about 80K with similar miles. It's just too big a delta. Kicking myself as I could have had a GTS for 90K about 2 years ago but told the dealer he was over priced and tried to wait him out for 2 months. Idiot I am.

That's impressive. How did they keep the stone guard on the rear fenders intact?

A wrap is fine!! Pick a cool color you like and do it. This way in 10 years when you sell, the pAint underneath is in great shape. Like other said, go to the best shop and you will have zero regrets. Good luck
