idrive display & radio repeatedly opens & closes

My idrive display & radio repeatedly opens & closes every 20 seconds.
I first pulled the display fuse to stop it, But the radio continued to turn on and off every 20 seconds, so I pulled that fuse as well.
Any ideas anyone?

Disclaimer: I don’t know what I’m talking about.

But I hear others say that when the battery is going bad, all sorts of gremlins pop up. Perhaps you want to check battery age, give it a proper charge, etc. Good luck solving the problem.

I've read that too. The battery is quite old..13 years. But I fully charged the battery and no change.

I think, again the same disclaimer, your 13-yo battery is done for. I say you try and programme a new one.

Did the display fuse cut something else?

As already nentioned on the UK forum, it sounds like a control board issue within the headunit.
Only way to check for certain is to see if someone us prepared to swap their headunit into your car and see what happens, my bet is that it'll work as it should. You don't just need a Z4, any CIC BMW headunit will do it, E90, 91, 92, 93, 81, 82, 84, 87 etc
All you need to do is plug in the quadlock connector and the LVDS cable, that'll be enough to test it.

On the battery idea, although it is old and probably in need of replacing, I doubt that's it, a duff battery normally appears in multiple systems not just one. Assuming here you're not having any other issues?

So, I did find a unit to swap and it turns out to be my head unit that is the problem. Next step is to find a used one but not having too much success. Any help locating one would be great.
The ID on unit is; BMW 6512 CI 9 214 941 01.

I'm located in Toronto, Canada.

Thanks

Thanks for the Ebay info. I found someone locally that repairs these units. In the end will cost less to repair instead of replace. Included is a lifetime warranty. They do need the CAS module to go with it. CAS is located in the driver side footwell...hoping it's not hard to get to.

I would doubt it…but I don’t know anybody that tried…

Given what CAS talks to I’d be surprised..
