Roof hydraulics leak
My warranty expired earlier this month, and I bought a 3-year extended warranty through BMW in part to cover any retractable roof problem.
Sure enough, this morning I noticed some oil on the passenger door and seat after opening the roof. Tried to close it and it started pissing hydraulic fluid all over the place! I booked a service appointment for tomorrow; will post results here. Has anyone else developed a hydraulic leak?

I have not had any leaking nor issues.
BUT I too purchased the BMW 3 Year Gold Protection Plan and will be curious about its acceptance and any out of pocket OR un covered items. Please advise on the fix.

The hydraulic line gave way. Apparently it's not covered under the Platinum warranty.
My dealer is trying to negotiate with BMW to have them cover at least part of the cost, otherwise I'm looking at a $1,850 repair. The line includes the wiring harness and goes to both sides, so at least I have hope the other side won't give up soon. Will keep you guys posted.

How can that be not covers under the extended warranty plan?
The plan covers and lists specifically the below all the items covered. I would argue until I was blue in the Face, that the hardtop and associated operating components are suppose to be a Permanent part of the car and SHOULD BE is covered under the Below listed warranty plan covered components. Convertible top storage lid & top drive motor Are that stating the actual hard top and no accessory drive components and parts like the hydraulic lines? Other parts specifically listed as covered which the top, electrical and hydrolic lines should be covered: Control Modules Sunroof Motor and Gear Remote electronic entrance system Manually & electrically operated switches Front & Rear Main Wiring Harnesses Complete BS.

I know nothing about the warranty, but isn't the hose main/key part of the whole roof mechanism? W/o it, the roof won't ftn. What's the point of having a warranty if they make an exception like that? I'd argue like hell. Btw, not sure how the hose failed but how exactly can they say it's a 'wear item': not as if it rubs against stuff and actually wears or is a moving part like brake pads or sparkplugs. It shouldn't erode and just disintegrate like that, or if pinched, then something was wrong w/ the mechanism.

Wow not cool!
Do you know if the warranty covers the radiator hoses and oil lines? That would an even more unpleasant surprise if a radiator hose goes, causing an engine overheat and that is chalked up to "hose.. wear and tear item.. failing" and not covering it Is this the OEM extended warranty right? not an aftermarket insurance plan? |

Update
Good news!
BMW of Ridgefield was able to convince BMW to pick up 100% of the cost. Parts are due in tomorrow. Keeping fingers crossed.

Congrats BUT it should have never been a discussion to begin with about the coverage.

By the way, what do you guys think about bringing things up proactively? When my car is in for service (tires, oil, etc) I bring up things like noisy roof so that it gets looked at and documented. My sense if you have a paper trail stretching well into the warranty period that it is better for you. Thoughts? |

Update
Update: it's gonna take another week.
The techs are really nervous about this job (10 hours or so!), they're never seen this repair before, so they're going to wait until their shop supervisor comes back from BMW training. At least they want to do it right the first time. No big deal, I'll be hunting turkey and offroading in Vermont for the next couple of weeks and I don't need the Z4 for that!

Hi ,
you should check the radius/line of the hydraulic hose (left and right). The first pic shows the correct radius/line and position of the hose. If the radius/line is too small it will crack the hose. If the radius /line is too large, the hose will touch the wall of the trunk and rubbing the hose (red arrow-second pic). For hose replacement , BMW has too disassemble the roof! Pictures were taken from BMW Z4 E89 "zroadster Forum" in Germany. regards ZettVier Last edited by ZettVier; 05-06-2014 at 08:45 AM.. |
