This somehow looks like a cheap move to manufacture cars to a lesser standard in terms of handling and braking at speed.
Volvo would normally have to make sure these cars can go safely between 140-155mph

For Germany, proud owners of more larger Volvo models will be stuck in the right lane with the trucks and RV's

This used to be our cruise-control speed

Aren't our cars limited to 155mph?

Surely there are more BMW drivers who what to go faster than 155 than there are volvo drivers wanting to go faster than 112.

Especially since most jurisdictions have speed limits of 70 or less.

Volvo's aren't enthusiast cars so their clients won't care a lick. Usually nerdy suburbanites driving them.

Wish BMW would push I drive updates or allow more customization of performance in the sport mode.

While I acknowledge the fact that this is a private company making this decision and not a a governmental one; Volvo themselves describe their intentions as very slippery slope like. You'll notice in their press release the following...

Apart from limiting top speeds, the company is also investigating how a combination of smart speed control and geofencing technology could automatically limit speeds around schools and hospitals in future.

Also there's this too...

"We want to start a conversation about whether car makers have the right or maybe even an obligation to install technology in cars that changes their driver´s behaviour, to tackle things like speeding, intoxication or distraction"

They're actually want to "start a conversation" about installing technologies in their cars that would "tackle" speeding? Sounds to me like limiting top speed, and speed around designated areas, is only the beginning of their speed control. How long until these hospital and school geofences expand to entire metropolitan areas?

They promise to deliver more information later this month...

Volvo Cars will present ideas to tackle the problem areas of intoxication and distraction at a special safety event in Gothenburg, Sweden on March 20.

Is there any surprise Volvo is owned by communist China? This just solidified I will never buy a Volvo. Thanks for starting the conversation Volvo! 🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻

I'm not sure that a warrant is necessary to get evidence, I think it could be brought by order of subpoena. In my world of administrative law, that is how it would happen.

One more reason why I will never buy a Volvo. I wouldn’t have anyway though, so whatever.

I really wanted to hate this, but then I tried to remember a time I went over 112mph anyway and drew a blank. If I was going to drag race etc., I'd get a purpose built car for that. For a daily it just doesn't matter (to me anyway).

Maybe if I ever took a road trip and found some wide open road out in the desert or whatever I'd find the rage for a bit? :/

Have you ever driven past a school or hospital? Are you ok with who knows whom determining where they want to limit your speed? What if you don't like the decision they made? Who do you petition for a change? What power do you have to change these decisions?

The Virginia State Police limit mine to around 74 MPH.

Just sayin'

You think speeding in a school area is necessary? Same goes for the decision made to not let anyone drive who is intoxicated above a level that it becomes dangerous....
You talk about that as if you have a problem with that. Is that too close to your personal situation?

I'm sure that active safety features like this eventually will be incorporated in the Euro NCap and NHTSA ratings. History learns that safety is a very strong sales argument. Not that a car has to be overly safe, but that no one buys an unsafe car, and that features that have a positive effect on Euro NCap and NHTSA ratings find themselves over time into all models.
We've seen it recently with active headrests (or at least, the testing of the seats itself), auto braking systems on luxury models etc.
Both features btw that volvo pioneered; whenever the way to test the ratings changes it seems that immediately existing volvo's jump out in these tests and that most other manufacturers have to implement an adaptive strategy.

So my prediction is that in the end the consumer market itself will choose for such safety features (like testing intoxicity and speed control in zones where its of upmost importance), making them find their way in all the cars over time except for maybe the very budget models.

I was reminded twice last year...

112 MPH rounds to 180 clicks per hour? Nice round number.
