Resale values

Has any noticed an uptick in the re sale values of the E89 in particular the 355is versions?

I get a regular Carfax report on my 2012 and it seems to have gained 4K this year. Is this my imagination?

Used car prices are up across the board right now due to shortage of new cars (due to chip shortage) as well as increasing costs of new.

I have noticed that trend too..
In my small country there arent many e89 Z4-s around... but at the moment there are 2 sdrive 23i-s with around 65k miles on the clock for sale for around 24k.. so what to ask for a fully optioned 35i with similar mileage? Such 23i models were alot cheaper 2 years ago. you could get something for like 16-17k or so.

I have been keeping an eye on prices in Germany because that dictates prices in my country the most. Its popular to import cars from there.

There i have definately noticed that prices are not decreasing anymore. Prices for a 35i like mine are basically the same this spring as it was last spring. Maybe slight price rise... 2000 eur or maybe more...

Im thinking that its partly because of inflation... maybe price correction because of it... value of the dollar or eur decreases so i ask more of it for the asset im selling?

I bought an absolute cherry (2011, one owner, perfect records) 35is last year with 70K on the clock for $20K. In this part of the country the same vehicle, same mileage are fetching about $25K now.

Used cars prices are blowing up, but a high performance two seater with a shoe box-sized trunk is pretty far out there on the commuter Bell-curve. With any luck we're climbing out of the "never own a BMW out of warranty" depreciation curve and gaining a little respect. If somebody could figure out how to retro-fit a cloth roof we might have a real winner...

Just bought a 2014 231s. Maybe I didn't get a bad deal after all. 26k miles, $22K.

Hi all, It's possible everything mentioned so far in this thread is true, and correct, but the unmentioned is catch. Before, the E89, all Z4s and Z3 had soft tops. To replace a worn, rotted soft top cost upwards of $1500 US to replace, plus labor, and any other parts that could be toss in the lot. The E89 presented another situation entirely, a folding hard top. I own two of these autos, a 2008 328IC, and 2009 Z4. Neither tops have given me any trouble so far. I bought a Bentley Manual for the 2008 328IC and the top is well documented in the manual. I suspect the top on the Z4 will be close to the same. People who own the E89 don't seem to want to part with their used pristine cars. So, the used market is rather sparse, and demand for the retractable hardtop is on the uprise, hence high prices for good used E89 units. The new model Z sales seem to be rather sluggish, and not many showing up in the "wild". Even the Toyota Supra model with the hardtop roof is a rare bird in the North East. I check the used car national prices every now and again, and find my Z model priced $5000 or more than I paid for my Z4. I think the Z4 with the retractible hardtop is going to become a classic. BMW has shot itself in the foot for dropping retractible hardtop Z from its line up.

Just out of curiosity I checked the BMW Germany website for seconds hand E89s, and there are not many of them (only two from 2016 and another one from 2015), and the prices do indeed seem higher than 2 years ago when I bought mine. If it's true that sales of the G29 are bad (and I would understand that; if it wasn't for the advantage of the hard top, I would have probably gone with Porsche instead of BMW for my roadster), then "BMW has shot itself in the foot for dropping retractable hardtop Z from its line up" indeed.

This was a little odd...first ever 2016 Z4 35i on Bring-a-Trailer yesterday with just 8K or so miles on it. Very clean.

Today...gone without a trace. I guess the owner pulled it. Anybody else see that?

Well the fact is hardtop trend has been over for years now. Manufacturers dont make hardtops anymore and replace models with softtops across the board. So if you want hardtop then used market is basically the only way to go.

That graph was taken from this video:

Funny, my Local BMW dealer is pushing new inventory Z4 340i's to me.

I thought the chip shortage was keeping inventories low?
