Hi,

I seem to have a basic professional head unit...would this system have any subwoofers anywhere? If so, where? Is there a better head unit I could swap this professional out for?

Many thanks

The basic system has 6 speakers …two woofers in the footwells by your feet, two 100mm mid range in the doors and two 100mm behind your outboard shoulders..

The 676 / 677 better systems have two 8” subs sat on the rear bulkhead behind the seats above the rear oddments shelf.

You can add subs in a variety of different ways..

Replacing the headunit with a bmw OE higher end version is a big big upgrade.

There are some third party head units with suitable trim that can replace the bottom end unit.

Quite a complex subject given options, budgets preferences..

When I bought mine it came with the very basic headunit. No bluetooth (calls) even though there is a button for it as it wasn't spec'd from the factory and it had really poor sound quality. My first mod was to fit a replacement (OEM) headunit that had Bluetooth (calls) built-in and the USB control (addition of the USB/AUX instead of just the AUX socket in the centre console). Once fully installed and coded I found that it had a much better internal amplifier giving a much better sound output (louder and clearer in general). To this I also fitted the two tweeters in the door pods.

I put together a How-To some years ago (so the links no longer work) that gives you all the info you want...

Other Plug-n-Play options include the Vibe POWERBOX65.4BMW3 amplifier that works with your existing syetem...

Or you could go for a full retrofit like the 676 or 677 systems. The 676 retrofit is what I'm now gearing up for fitting very soon now as I'm just getting the last couple of bits. But it's a lot of work.

Depending on your enthusiasm and/or abilities I'd recommend the Vibe amp, and probably their shallow depth sub as well, as a great contender for an effective but simply solution.
