One of Tesla's main competitors right now in the US is Ford. These price drops really put Ford and others in a bad position. Ford had negative 40.6% margin per EV unit sold in 2022. They simply don't have ability to lower prices to match.

You have to sincerely hate Tesla to buy a MachE over a Model Y now. MachE lost half the $7500 credit. Model Y gets full credit and the recent Tesla price drop. For example, MachE GT is now effectively $13,755 more than Model Y Performance. GT model is just dead in the water. Also less range and worse performance.

Tesla is brilliant with these moves and its sales figures prove it...They are letting people get a taste of Tesla at Honda Civic prices in hopes that it will lock them in as a customer for life....in most cases, it will probably work.

Tesla is so much more than self driving...that is actully low down on the list that make them so great. Instant speed, no more gas, no more maintenence, one pedal driving become very addicting. I hardly ever use the autopilot feature, its too much fun driving it myself
Finally someone with sense.

Some people will never get it. Thank god someone is dropping knowledge while I’m too busy lmaoooooo all over the place.

I enjoy my fun ICE car, but I will probably continue to have an EV in the garage for the foreseeable future. So I'm always looking at the new EV offerings and personally I just can't find anything that competes with Tesla for what I want in an EV. Like the Polestars which I actually like, but price for speed and range just doesn't even come close and frankly for an EV that's all I personally care about.

Others like the Tycan.... if ICE wasn't still a thing then MAYBE, but at that price I would rather get an ICE Porsche. None of the models come close to the range and acceleration of even the model 3 unless you get up to the over 100k range. Is handling and what not better, probably, but at double or more the cost for less range and acceleration. Again I would personally rather have the Tesla and an ICE Cayman or 911 or what not.

Maybe the Ford or the Hyundais, but then you have to deal with dealers and shitty charge network (not a huge deal for me since I mostly use it local) with Ford you get the crappier 3/36 warranty. I also personally love the tech in the Tesla and all the app functions, not sure if these others have the same thing, but I know the Ford has keys and a start button and what not... no. I wish there was more out there that would compete with Tesla on price and performance because honestly I don't want to just have to buy a Tesla as my EV forever. I also wish Tesla updated their models more. Apart from the recent interior redesign of the S and X and minor facelifts the cars have basically gone unchanged since the start.

I watched some video and it seemed like they weren't that surprised by the outcome.....showed the launch control staff etc cheering after it the "unscheduled disassembly".

I did not watch the whole thing, but from the commentary I did hear I believe it's because the test run went further than they expected. Also heard they have a self destruct function in case the thing goes rouge or something and before it blew it started kinda flopping around wildly so might have been self destructed.

That's what I heard, don't know for sure.

They also haven't had to undercut their status or brand value to achieve their goals, nor have their stock tank while doing such "brilliant" moves. They have surely made their fair share of mistakes along the way. I'm just wondering why this brilliance isn't reflected in the stock price. Maybe it's just that investors are dumb.

Well to defend those guys a little bit, Tesla does have the best market share in electric vehicles. Now granted their cars are ugly as crap especially compared to Audi and Porsche but they do have superior charging networks and their cars most definitely go further per charge. Lastly, I personally like Elon Musk quite a bit. Especially what he did with Twitter.

Not gonna pretend that I know anything about Tesla business model or why their stock goes up or down... but thinking that investors are smart...

Great points. Also, remind me how much the US government or individual states subsidized BMW?

Tesla is in a growth phase, BMW is many generations old.

In the past Year:
BMW is +7.86 (27.53%)past year
Tesla is -172.40 (-51.27%)past year

That ties back to the point I was making, Tesla is trying to grow past the markets capacity/desire to ingest it's product, to the point it is willing to harm it's margins and alienate it's investors.

It will take time to see just how brilliant that decision is, but we have some data markers that are hinting (strongly) at the need for a change in strategy.

Any guesses on how long Tesla will keep the current line up going with little to no changes? The Tesla lineup is OLD and is rivaling what Toyota has done with the 4runner which originally debuted in 2010 and has received only minor updates for the LAST 14 YEARS! If Tesla was like other automakers and introduced truly new model updates every 3 to 5 years, they wouldn't exist. The recent Tesla model MSRP cost cutting is largely the result of a very stale model lineup and economies of scale of keeping things stale. It's also clear how much profit is built into the cars. Tesla isn't alone in this though. I'm looking at you domestic full size truck makers and the suckers that pay stupid money for simple and cheap to manufacture body on frame trucks.

Elon Musk is an amazing innovator and we need more people like him to say "Who says we can't do that?" and then wave a middle finger as he does it. I have thousands in Tesla stock to prove my support of the company.

Are EVs the automotive future? Nope. Are they part of the future? Yep. So is full ICE and hybrid using gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels.

Lets not overlook the two stock splits in the last three years. 5-1 in 2020 and 3-1 last year.

Next major update is to Model 3. Project Highland update is due around Sept timeframe. New front/rear bumpers, headlights, mirrors, cameras/electronics, interior refresh, rumored new seats.

False! Tesla sold 181k cars last quarter here in the USA, obviously people out there are happy with their EV's. There are people who are as excited about their EV's as we are about ICE.

We as enthusiasts are a tiny almost insignificant buying demographic. Who oftentimes falsely believe we dictate overall car sales in the industry.

I’m on my 5th Electric

And yes I am definitely still an enthusiast

The low cost to operate it supplements the cost of owning my ///M car
