Could this be a Fuel Pump problem?

Several times in the last few days, when starting my 2009 Z4 3.0 Sdrive, I've noticed a drop in RPMs after a longer crank period. The car seems to shiver and quake during this period, but does not stall. After less than a minute the problem seem to stop, and normal idle resumes. Sometimes when coming to a soft stop at a stop light the same shiver and quake occures. Today following a cold start, the engine sputtered and stalled. I put my Foxwell 510 scan tool on it and found no code on fuel pump, nor module. I'd like to find where to start on the troubleshooting of this problem so I'm not stranded. Thanks.

Check out my thread, I've been having engine prbs too. However, yours sounds more like the prbs I had before years earlier, almost identical symptoms and I needed to have my HPFP and fuel injectors replaced. You're lucky as I assume you bought a USDM car as they are both warranted - I had to pay out-of-pocket for the lousy fuel injectors.

I may be lucky about the HPFP. Seems the 3.5 engines have the HPFP installed. The 3.0 has the fuel pump installed in the gas tank, along with the fuel gauge. I'm thinking here in New England, there are no ethanol free stations. Plus, there is a lack of any repair info for this car. That stems from Congress allowing all the "Freedom to Repair" legislation to expire. Now companies do not have to provide repair information. Such as for Bentley Manuals, Chiltons Manuals, and others.

Hello All, After days of stalls, poor idling at start up, I took my 2009 Z4 3.0 in for a tire problem, and check out for engine problem. I expected it to be the in tank fuel pump, since the 3.0 does not have a HPFP. The mechanic checked and found a list of things that caused the poor performance, and stalls. It came to be air leaks in air system from the air filter box through the 90 degree air path, it had fallen off the housing for the throttle body. Plus, the mass air sensor was loose. The actual throttle body was full of carbon, and needed only to be toughly cleaned with solvent. Once cleaned, leaks in air fixed, no further problem. If the problem returns, I'll need a new throttle body. Now, you know. Easy fix, less than $100 US.
